Not sure why this topic was downvoted before, it's actually an interesting topic. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has finished creating a character in a game, not sure what to name them, then get stuck staring the screen trying to think of a name but unwilling to exit the game of task switch (in case the game crashes) to avoid creating the character all over again.

If the game has a name generator, I just use that. For Icewind Dale, I use an online Forgotten Realms name generator. Anything else, I think of similar characters from other games and just name them after that character.

Naming the character is usually my least favorite part of character creation.

Edit: Sometimes I name my characters after their purpose. My first character in Grim Dawn is called "Squishy" cos I knew as a first character he would be dying a lot. So far he has died 519 times.

I usually use names from my extensive Pen&Paper gaming history. Some memorable character that fits the role, either one I played or someone I played with. So even in a larger party I will automatically know who is the tief, who the warrior, who the mage and so on. Because they are based on memorable predecessors.
Most of the time I use names of characters from fantasy books I read. In case it is a JRPG I use names from Anime series when possible.

I am not very creative on that front I'm afraid ;)

dtgreene: So, when you play these games, how do you choose names for your party members?
He, Him, Mate, Bruv, Pal, and an occasional SlutServingTheBoys thrown in for good measure.
I use names from characters in movies and tv-shows (Star Trek, Star Wars, etc.).
I kind of think "imagine if this character was in this game", that sort of thing.
It's nice to attach some personality to your party members.

forkakova: I often use an online genrator like this one for RPG :

dtgreene: Good, but doesn't have any option for robot names.

dtgreene: Edit: Why the low rating?
I don't get it either. So have a + from me. Unlike someone else, you at least seem to be genuinely interested in the topics you start.

I tend to name my characters descriptively, so that I can remember right away who and what each party member is. And being a Finn, I tend to mix up Finnish and English into Finglish.

So for instance in Icewind Dale 1-2, I recall I had characters like:

Tiina Thieffi (a female rogue, mostly acting as a scout)
Ville Wizardi (a cis male sorcerer or such)
Palle Paladiini (a Swedish genderfluid paladin who leads the party; the name comes from the world-famous Swedish comedy series, Balle Ramsted shöw)

And so on and so forth, you get the gist of it.

I go with historical and literary names. Dante, Giordano, Arthur, Lucrezia, Philippe, Leopold, Helena, etc.
