I tried to play Ultima 1 and even Wasteland looks fucking graphically stunning compared to it. I mean, it was probably a good game in its day but god is it hard to immerse myself. Not to mention the "back in the day" no auto save feature. Ultima 1 was harder then Ninja Gaiden 1 in my opinion, in the beginning at least.

Reading the manual, non-spoilers beginner guides and watch gameplay videos. I also try to make the game work as I want them to so one less thing to worry about.

That said, not well aged as in non-intuitive controls, gameplay or UI doesn't bother me nearly as much as lack of proper saving system or ridicously hard difficulty.
IMO, If you're not a retrogamer or if you didn't play those games in their own era, then it's not easy to enjoy them. When you play old/retro games, you should ignore and forget the games of current era. Don't compare them with current AAA and top graphics game. Just focus on their story and gameplay.

Your mind should prepare itself for old games. Shift to previous gaming generation step by step. Try 2000s, then 1990s, then 1980s. Both console and pc games. I don't say you must abandon your current games and just play retro games because it's not helpful. Just play them regularly. You need to improve your retro atmosphere. Your brain needs to accept old games as a part of your gaming life.

But remember that you can't force yourself to enjoy a game when it's not a suitable game for you. For example, some GOG members enjoy Wasteland 1, the game is top rated and it has very positive reviews. But it does not guarantee that game must be enjoyable for you too.

CARRiON.FLOWERS: How do you solve it? You don't.

You either deal with it or move on to something more interesting.

Prah: So basically your advice is to spend money on games that might be fun or they might suck? Basically playing some kind of game version of Russian roulette? Is that how you do it or?

RebelCurse: Get hold of Planets' Edge or Betrayal at Krondor, even if out dated they will hook you in and that's a guarantee.

Prah: I couldn't find Planet's Edge on GOG. However Betrayal at Krondor (and the sequel that doesn't seem that aged) might be fun, especially since I've read the book series that they're based on!
Maybe Gog doesn't sell it and if they don't then they should if they can get the rights. As for BAK,you have to ignore the graphics on today's modern machines as it's a great game and story.
Not sure if it is age, or my dislike of that perspective, or the UI just bothering me, but despite all the praise for innovation and such that The Last Express got, I've not been able to advance more than 2 or 3 screens in that game :(.

As for "handling", if it is a simple matter of graphics (only an issue for me with pre-2002 3D games), I just hunt around and hope for a graphical mod. Other than that, not much one can do.

Congrats for making me sound way sleezy! :-D
With a pint of beer you can handle anything!!

WRONG! :P

Older games, (and I'm going back to 2600, NES) are not playable drunk. Try Contra or Super Mario with a few beers and your ass is toast.

New games, at least most of them, are perfectly playable shitfaced.

Yeah that I know, I'm just pointing that out because I will probably not bother trying to get it work by myself then :)

I'm cautious and read some reviews or I'm cheap and only buy them for a really small price.

There are some good old games which do not have newest graphics but they still play really well (Age of Wonders 1) and there are once good but not anymore old games which are just not that much fun because interface was clumsy or game mechanics is outdated or graphics looks really ugly compared to modern days.

Ultimately if the game is too bad I cannot play it anymore. So I test them and then in some cases I have to admit that I bought shit. It happens.
