idbeholdME: The horror aspect gradually goes down in the subsequent games for the sake of action when it comes to Dead Space. You should also always play them on the hardest difficulty. It makes enemies tougher and reduces the amount of stuff you get from drops (ammo, credits). The ammo situation depends mostly on how accurate you are. If you hit most of your shots you can usually just barely keep up with the consumption.

teceem: I like horror for the atmosphere (/story), the shooting is secondary. So I play always survival horror on the easiest setting.
To me, it adds to the tension. Knowing that I could run out of ammo at a critical moment or not being able to always use the best weapon I have etc. In Dead Space, difficulty also increases the amount of damage the enemies do so healing items can also be in short supply if you get jumped on/ambushed and have to burn through several at once.

I understand that, the tension. But isn't that the "fear" of - when you die, having to play the same part over again (and over, and over...)?
So, there are atmospheric horrors, like SOMA,
and horrors fearful & deadly, as Dead Space.
A nice choice, what who likes.
