HI!

The day has come for a new Heroic release and here we are, with one of the biggest in recent times.
This new release brings tons of new features and improvements for GOG games which makes it more feature-complete than ever!

We also started a partnership with GOG and now every game you buy from the GOG store inside Heroic will give us a commission, so it is another way of supporting the project. :)
The link is also available at https://heroicgameslauncher.com/donate if you prefer to purchase games in your web browser.

GOG Changes
Reworked downloading module
Ability to install and uninstall DLCs at any point (Windows and Mac builds) *
Ability to change game language at any point (Windows and Mac builds) *
Xdelta-based patching support for Windows and Mac builds *
Automatic installation of game dependencies as long as they are provided by GOG (Windows builds) *
New implementation of install script interpreter
Faster way of downloading and updating Linux native games *
Beta channels support for Windows and Mac builds (it's now possible to access Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition) *
Support for password-protected beta channels (potentially useful for game devs who want to try out GOG build in Heroic)
Version rollback for Windows and Mac builds *
Ability to view changelogs on the game page
REDMod integration for Cyberpunk 2077
(*) Works on Linux when installing Windows games, but not for Linux builds since it is not supported by GOG.

General Changes
Added a message on the library when no games were found due to filters applied or not logged in on any stores
Improved the Wine settings install dialog for Windows games on Linux and macOS
Winetricks fixes are enabled by default now
Added Wine/Proton explanation on Wine Manager
Several UI/UX and performance improvements
Fixes
Fix the width of the image in the Add Game dialog
[Windows] Fix playtime tracking and auto cloud save-sync
Pass --skip-sdl when updating/repairing Epic games
Several other small fixes
Prevent double input when using a controller on the SteamDeck
Fix some cases where the install dialog got stuck fetching the install size

Wait a second... Why would GoG support / partnership with a launcher that is a direct competitor?

Lazy Linux fix?
Neat to see this still going strong. :) Especially for the more Linux-minded folks. That said, anyone have experience with both Heroic and Galaxy? Just wonder what people's takeaway might be.
Honestly if they went with Heroic I would be fine with it if the budget for Galaxy went towards getting more games that are stuck in legal limbo or delisted onto GOG.

GOG is a game store, not a launcher store.

Heroic is free and agnostic right? And apparently does many things better than Galaxy 2? Plus I think it's pretty clear Galaxy 2 never took off and GOG doesn't have the resources to build and support it well.

Is it really a competitor? I think it's just another way to reach more potential customers, "use Galaxy and buy from us, but if you're using something else, keep buying from us as well".
Also, it runs natively on more operating systems than their own client, so there are Heroic users that GOG isn't even targeting with Galaxy.

Okay, that's a very solid argument.
It's not really competing with anything, if you're still buying games from GOG regardless. It's just another way to play the games you want, especially on Linux which has no native Galaxy support. I've heard the Galaxy client is very subpar anyway, even on Windows. So if GOG is going to officially support Heroic, that's great news, because it's a fantastic launcher. I highly recommend it.
I'd like Heroic more if:
A) It supported Dosbox
B) It wasn't a fucking Electron app.
I don't like how Lutris doesn't match any desktop I use, but I do prefer how it does things.

1st and biggest difference - Heroic has no Achievement implementation. If you want to gather achievements - you have to install Galaxy through Wine.

2nd) Heroic is surprisingly easy to use. The first 3 games I installed ran without any tinkering or problems. The next 3 though... that's a different matter, but that's something more to do with gaming on Linux, rather than the launcher itself.

3rd) Enabling or disabling Game time tracking is... somewhat hidden. Every game has a checkbox ''run offline'' - This does not seem to be playtime_tracking... I'm not sure what it is.
Under advanced settings there is ''disable playtime synchronisation (currently only GOG supported (v.2.11.0))''

As to how it compares to Galaxy v.2 -- they're both actually rather similar... both allow you to play games from other stores... filter based on stores... but not filter based on genres or other stuff...

Heroic also did not have version rolleback. Reading the changelog it now seems to have.

What else... Galaxy is GOG's (windows) launcher, and Heroic is a Linux launcher... so there's changes in this regard... (In Heroic you have built-in Wine manager; In Galaxy you can put a rating on a game; Stuff like that...)

EDIT:
You can use an older Heroic version, if you so choose. Galaxy had this quirk that it would auto-update and you were forced to use the ''latest & greatest version'', whether you wanted to, or not.

Can Heroic download Offline Installers, without installing, and do file verification checking?

I don't believe so, no. But you can backup the installed games onto a separate drive, and if anything happens, just import them back to Heroic later.
