The Book is "Thief's Magic" by Trudi Canavan.

I know this is a gaming forum, but since a number of people seem to have similar tastes as I do I figure I would ask it here.

I read a book about a year ago. I believe it was the start of a series, and I wanted to see if any others were out. So I think it was fairly new when I read it. The problem is I can't remember the name of the book or the author.

Things I remember:

Setting: Steampunk with some magic thrown in
Magic types: I remember only two (maybe three) being talked about, one was the ability to expand and contract air (to heat it, cool it, move it), the other was the ability to move between worlds (I think it was supposed to be an extension of the first,) and the other was some sort of necromancer or something who made a book to teach people but it would be able to read and record the thoughts of anyone who touched it.

The book was made from materials from a living girl who was an assistant to the necromancer.

The main character found the book on an expedition to the mountains aboard an airship that was pushed / controlled by people able to push the air.

Upon returning to school he keeps the book for a while but eventually the faculty find out then try to steal the book.

I can't remember much more.

Haven't read it by myself, so take that with a grain of salt...but maybe "The Twinborn Trilogy", by J.S.Morin?

Or the "Mad Tinker Chronicles", by the same author?

I think, they are all set in the same world.

They (the latter at least) seem to be set in a magically enhanced Steampunk world, with airships, guns, etc.
And the main character in "Mad Tinkers Daughter" works in a school/ university.

And they "switch between worlds" in their sleep - actually, they are different persons, but connected to each other via their dreams.

And in the description to the "Twinborn Trilogy", there is a Necromancer mentioned. Or a war of the necromancers...
You can also try going to Goodreads forums and posting your question in one of the steampunk groups, they're usually very knowledgeable as they focus on those kinds of books.

If you do find the answer elsewhere, do post it here as well please as the book does sound fun! :)

Those seem quite interesting, and have gone on my to read list, however they are not the one I read. The world travel was more deliberate, In one part I think the protagonist almost dies testing his ability to travel. And I seem to remember him having a rope ties to him so someone could pull him back should something go wrong, but I could be messing up the book with another.
Gardens of the Moon?

Random_Coffee: Gardens of the Moon?
Nope definitely more steampunk and less politically motivated (no mention of wars that I can remember unless they were ancient history.)

The kind that harshly discourages people from falling asleep while reading their books.

Sorry, the best I could come up with is Sabriel. Here is a wiki link to the description. Seems interesting none the less.

You don't remember any names of characters do you? Any pictures on the book cover?

It sounds like something Lindsay Buroker would have written, but I can't find anything like that from her novels. I highly recommend her as an author though, sounds like you would enjoy her style. The emperors edge is a free book, good one to start with ;-)

Nope none of those, but does seem fairly similar tone. I'm definitely going to read the first EE novel.

It's definitely not Sabriel, I read that one - but its sequel, Lirael, does feature a book made of human skin and it's a very good read, so I recommend it!
