In the 90s there was this platformer-like game with a guy stuck on some planet, and I seem to recall there was this distinct aura like health representation of the player figure in the lower left part of the screen (my modest drawing of this attached

Can you please give us more hints? Like:

Similar games (i.e. - a game whose visuals and gameplay you find similar to the game you're looking for).

Specific images or aesthetics - image on the game box, the layout of a certain level or the design of a "Boss" or monster.

Try to give more details about the game that you think can distinguish it from other games you've played.

Beyond the advice karnak1 gave -- what console/computer model/OS did you play it on? That alone could help narrow the field considerably.
Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure?

Strijkbout: Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure?
No, checked some screenshots, it's not that one.

What I remember is that the game play was a bit clunky and the layout was pretty horizontal with perhaps not more than 2-3 player sizes on screen (*I THINK*)

The aesthetics were actually pretty nice, the game had a bit of suspense/mystery to it.

It was playable on PC, I think I recall using DOS at the time. Again, memory is tricky after so many years.

The most distinguishing characteristic was the health status of the player.

Writing this, I think the game had two modes, one with this "platform" mode and the other which was going between the locations (but I don't recall how was that other mode done).

Did the character fire guns, use magic? How did the main character destroy enemies?

How were the scenarios like?
A castle? A jungle? Ruins?
Please, try to give as many details as you can.
Like, what did the main character look like? Was it a human? Some sort of creature? etc...
Is it Flashback: The Quest for Identity?
Did the game use a mouse or the keyboard? Do you remember any other gauges on the screen? Which company made the game?
How about Lands of Lore 3 - see some screenshosts and more info here:

?
Heart of Darkness?
What the hell is a "platform-like" game?

The description (90s, stuck on a planet, player figure as part of the health system) made me think of this:
https://www.gog.com/game/robinsons_requiem_collection

However - there are no platforms involved, and the figure is not permanent on screen, instead there has to be an icon clicked for the player's character to be shown on screen...and there is no aura, as far as I remember.

Would this be the lower right part in your drawing, or the "other lower right"? :)

No, wasn't flashback.

It's not Robinson's requiem, you're right, it's lower left part of the screen! :D

Maybe it's The Terminator 2029?
It's the only game that I can think of that has that green aura health display on the bottom left side of the screen.
However, the game is not a Platformer but a Tile-Based First Person Shooter.

And if I'm recalling it correctly it took place on earth.. not someone "stuck on some planet."
