1sealion: I want a new computer that can play most steam and gog games . Can anyone suggest a good gaming computer since I don’t understand all the specs

eolsunder: Yea unless you know the basics about computers it can be confusing. So don't be afraid to ask questions. Now, for the most part good gamers will ask you how much your looking to spend on a computer. You also need to give them any details like if you need the monitor, keyboard, etc along with it. Many already have such things and just buy the basic computer without the accessories. Most in-store computers usually come with the monitor, etc.

When it comes to the video cards and graphics required, you can't go with just numbers. Each video card type and company is different and names their cards different. For the most part, a higher card number means its newer and usually better. Like if a video card model is 800, and current cards are 960's, usually the current cards are newer in design and of course usually higher in price (but not sometimes).

With Intel processor chips, the general rule is they have 3 timers, I3 chips, I5 chips, and I7 chips. The generation of the chip (how old it is) is the 2nd number after the type of chip. For instance, a I7-5775c is a 5 generation chip (older) than a I7-6800 6th generation chip. Again that doesn't mean its faster or better, but most of the time it does.

Just ask questions and do a little google searching/internet homework and you can learn the differences, etc.

Finally, also let us know just how much you do gaming, what type of games do you usually play (current high graphic new games, or older games that don't require a current top end gaming rig. Also if you do a lot of online multiplayer type gaming compared to solo pc gaming at home, etc. And do you use the computer for other things other than gaming.
Take a look at my link I sent on the Best Buy computer and see what you think of that would play most of steam games. Do I play steam games or just gog?

Steam and GOG are just different storefronts/distributors. There's no difference in the games' requirements from one to the other. The important thing to look at is what the game description says, not where you're buying it from.

*edit* As WinterSnowfall said, you should have no troubles with that rig.

I know that but most of the games I want are from steam and are not on gog. Does anyone know if The above computer from Best Buy will work with the steam link ?

It will work with Steam, GOG, Origin and any other digital distribution platform and client you can think of, since it comes with Windows 10 as an OS.

Btw, not sure if you're aware of it, so I'll just mention it: you can have both Steam and GOG clients installed on that computer and play games both from Steam and GOG. All PCs that come with Windows can do that.

Of course it will. That has to do with your OS, not your PC specs. As noted, if you have Win10, you're good. Win7 works as well.
So once again will the above computer I listed from best buy work with most of the steam and gog games and steam link ?
The 7700 CPU and 16GB RAM are easily enough. It is exactly what I have and have pretty much no issues.

One more thing I will add is that the required GPU depends mostly on your monitor. Based on your resolution, you need an adequate GPU. If you have the standard 1920x1080, you should be completely fine. If you have 2560X1440 monitor, 1070 will be fine for 60 FPS but if the monitor also has high refresh rate (120Hz, 144 Hz or 165Hz), the GTX 1070 will NOT be enough to push that high in newer games. But for old games it should be completely fine.
That's about the general price for that type of computer. I7 processor and 1070 video card. Its plenty for current gaming and for the near future as a store bought computer. Ifs fine if its in your price range.
Little confused on the GPU comment . I have a old school monitor from 8 yrs ago . Can’t I still use that with a new computer ? If not I guess I’ll get a new monitor but you are saying the graphics card will be too slow if I want to play newer games? Everyone else here keeps saying the comp from Best Buy should work so not I’m confused that the 1070 is not fast enough ? Yes I want to play newer games that are retro in style but have been just released last year and this year

Any monitor will work. It's just that some new monitors have things like 2560x1440 resolution at 165Hz, where the 1070 would struggle at hitting those 165 frames.

The GPU performance is very dependant on the monitor's parameters. But if you have an 8 year old monitor and don't plan on upgrading it, then 1070 is enough by a lot and you can go ahead and buy the comp.
Ok well what about a large screen tv? That’s the whole purpose of me wanting a steam link so I can play gog and steam games on my downstairs large screen tv. I have read other blogs . I jut want to confirm I can play gog games on steam link as well ? Will the 1070 gpu work with a large screen tv?
Yes it will, very easily. The Bigscreen TV most likely isn't 120 Mghz refresh or 4K. If it is 4K your frames per second will be lower but it will still play. It will just be little more sluggish perheps. That would also be your HD or HDD plug. On your older mointor its probably a VGA plug. I dont game competitively anymore and play on a bigscreen because its much easier on my eyes and more immersive for me.

Edit: I just seen this thread as opposed to the one that was showing above it for me. That price is also very high with only 2GB's of RAM, and no SSD at first glance. Also the type of games you listed are not resource heavy games at all. The CPU and GFX card are overkill for those types of games. But then you said all Steam games and GoG games, so those specs would be required.

It has 16GB RAM. No SSD, but a 1TB HDD. It's not a bad rig at all. He linked to it in post 9.
So there is a game on steam I want called blossom tales and the min spec is a Intel pentium g3250 yet the above computer I was looking at boasts of pentium. 7700? Does this mean the game will work because 3250 is a smaller number than 7700?

The 7700 is a lot faster than the G3250.
