My name is Josh, and I was first introduced to video games when I was six years old; a relative showed me an early Wheel of Fortune game on his Apple II computer. That only escalated two years later, when I started playing the original Nintendo...and what started as a casual hobby became a compulsive childhood addiction. I continued with the Super NES, N64, and Gamecube, plus way too much time with CastleVania: Symphony of the Night on the original PlayStation...but that eventually began affecting me both mentally and emotionally, so I abandoned it. Some of my other favorite games though included the first six Mega Man entries, Super Metroid, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Metroid Prime. I also played the Wii quite a bit, especially New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Super Mario Galaxy. I don't have a Switch yet, one of the primary reasons being the high price tag.

I found this website through a search engine, looking for a working arcade port of the first Mortal Kombat game on PC. To my surprise, the site offered the first three in a pack for only six bucks, so I jumped at it. Unfortunately, I then spent more than a full day confused and stressed out, because the game wouldn't respond to my USB controller. I emailed GOG Support over it, and in the meantime started looking elsewhere for help. Finally, I found a YouTube video that guided me one step at a time, on how to get the interface working properly...and so far, it appears to be going well. I haven't tested the second or third games yet, but I'm sure I'll get to them over the next few days.

Hi, nice post. I've never played Castlevania SotN, but I'm curious what made you play it way too much?
Did you just enjoy going through it? Or did you try to 100% it? Or did you speedrun it?

I was going through a very dark period in my life at that point, watching a lot of horror films and other stuff that was self-destructive. I think devoting so much time to that game, at the expense of all else, accelerated everything else I was dealing with. I don't think I ever got 100% on it, but I know there's multiple endings. The first involves beating Richter without the Holy Glasses, the second does the same with them on, and the third has you shattering the orb which controls him, opening up the Inverted Castle which is challenging beyond reason. But there's a great trick you can do at the game's very start, where you can keep the Grim Reaper from stealing your weapons. It makes the whole thing a lot easier in general.

Hard to believe I read the entirety of your post. It's not far from most experiences with gaming, but an Apple II does sound like a treat I'd take a bite out of. Though, I can't say the quality of games spread evenly outside of Nintendo. In any case, glad you could stop by.

The games you played growing up are the same as mine, though I stayed a lot more with PS1, N64 and PS2 era games (mostly PS2).

GOG is amazing for many classic games and for actually owning the products you buy as they're DRM-Free, facilitating backup of game files, mods and custom player file structures.

A good warning though is that many recent games are outdated (specially the 2015+ mark I'd say) and some that are updated can only have its updated version downloaded using Galaxy.
You can still use community tools like lgogdownloader or GOGcli to download Galaxy builds, but the problem exists, so be aware of that.

On the game fixes side, GOG is really good on porting older games for modern systems, but some are hit and miss and you will also need to search for external fixes. Look out for "Good Old Game" tagged games, as they applied a "generic fix all" fix on those and some of them might be broken on some situations last time I checked. Maybe they are working on fixing games individually now, I have no idea.

Yeah, I plan on making physical backups of my GOG downloads, so that if anything ever happens to my external hard drive I can still play them. That came across as a little confusing; could you please elaborate for me? Yeah, what finally solved the problem with the Mortal Kombat port for me was finding the YouTube video I referenced. Here it is.

The summary is that some devs/publishers launch their games here and never touch it again or treat their GOG versions of games as less important:
- Updates take days, months or even years to come (on some cases, never come);
- Game features are only launched on the competition estores;
- DLCs, extras, manuals and so on are launched elsewhere, but not here;
- things like that.

Not GOG's fault, many times, mind you.
Many times Devs also have not the workforce or time to manage so many builds and they decide to not support GOG versions anymore. Many reasons... But this happens, unfortunately. You're welcome!
