Star Wars sucks
I find it funny that this scene gets discussed so much when it's pretty much the only change to the remastered version of the trilogy that's pretty much universally agreed upon one way or the other (in this case, you'd be pretty hard pressed to find anyone arguing it's a good change).

Crosmando: Star Wars sucks
Certain aspects of the universe are compelling for fun, but in reality it's kinda crappy.

I'd rather go for Claymore as a whole universe of it's own, and a HeroSystem game based on it. THAT would be fun :)

zeogold: I still don't get why this is such an issue.
It is an issue for those numbnuts who have made a religion out of star wars.

sunshinecorp: Or rather, only Han shot.

rtcvb32: To add my only two serious cents to the discussion, what does the original book say, since that would be the source material, which from what I understand is close to 1:1 to the movie. If Lucas says Han didn't shoot first, then he didn't shoot first; Instead mistakes were made during making the original film.

But what do I know...
You know nothing. NOTHING.

Because we hate Lucas.
We're all sure.

No, we just hate Lucas.

The only reason SW got fame is because it was the "first" to put sci-fi on the screen in color with advanced special effects (yes I'm aware others probably did sci-fi on the screen but nothing close to the budget of SW). If a sci-fi movie that was done competently was on the big screen before SW it would of got that fame too.

That doesn't seem quite right. From what I've seen and gathered, a lot of the movies coming out were all pretty much the same, after war propaganda, murder mysteries, private eye, war time stuff, etc etc.

I think the public were starving for something fresh and unrelated to a recent war that they'd gotten finished with, a change of tone for everyone with something more light hearted. So if everyone wasn't starving for something new rather than something sci-fi, almost anything could have caught on.

I think it was this documentary i watched sometime last year, talks about the time period, the making of the movies, lots of behind the scenes stuff.

Because it's pretty much the starting point of Han's character arc, and our introduction to him. He's a smuggler, he owes money, which is the only reason he's helping Ben an Luke, and he's the kind of guy who shoots first and doesn't miss a beat. Not only does the reworked scene just look silly, with the terrible effect of Han tilting his head, but it just weakens Han's character and the way he develops. And it's just symbolic of all the unnecessary changes, bad CG, a chosen, perfect example of just how Lucas insanely sabotages his own creation.

I didn't know there was a dispute whether Han shot first or not. I thought the only disagreement was whether the change was a good call or not.
Meh. I'm not too concerned with what Lucas, or indeed any other fan, decides happened in their own canon. In my personal canon, while being precisely accurate for the most part, the film got the events of those few seconds wrong and Han shot first. Similarly, in reality Anakin didn't talk about not liking sand, "Alderaan" is actually Naboo*, Dooku was well intentioned and not intentionally working for Sidious, and the characters didn't all become computer animations during the clone wars. In all these cases the scenes as represented by the films are inaccurate, and in all these cases I'm happy to accept that as a flaw of the medium (in all examples but the last, the medium being "Lucas' writing") and use my imagination to fill in the bits where they are inaccurate. Other people, of course, are welcome to decide what happened for themselves and will probably come up with a different canon to me.

* If Naboo appears in the new films, this will itself immediately become incorrect.
actually, in the upcoming remaster, neither of them shot at all. a malfunctioning droid bumps into the table and releases an energy pulse which causes both guns to go haywire and while greedo's shot lands comically into a large alien's armoured rear end, han's shot ricohets off one of the band's instruments, somebody's drink, and a droid to hit Greedo.

What about the odd couple remake where C3PO moves in with Jabba?
*Han Was Shot First.

tinyE: I've totally lost interest in this argument TBH. 20 years ago it really bothered me but now I just watch the movie and say, "Fuck it."
It was never an argument. There are people who don't care and people who don't like the change.
Threads like this remind me how much some people care about Star Wars.

Can't say I fully comprehend it. I always found the franchise entertaining, but not profound.

The very best thing that came out of the franchise for me are the Jedi games where you get to hack people in half with lightsabers and force push them off cliffs.
