"Controllers suck for you"

Just thought I'd clarify that groundbreaking conclusion.

And reading this thread shows me how much "realism" really is valued. I'll have to remember this thread in case someone else throws the "but it's more realistic my way" the next time I advocate for some game feature and they oppose it basing it on "realism," such as totally getting rid of carry weight limits in open world RPG's.

The only controller that I love is

This

entroumi: My biggest issue is that after playing for too long skin on my thumbs starts peeling or just feels weird.
I do get that from using the D-pad a lot (I hate having to use the D-pad), but fortunately most games nowadays can be controlled using only thumbsticks.

Realism isn't same thing as objectivity. That controller suck for Breja is a real thing after all.

And remember, there is no objectivity when values are concerned.

I get it from using sticks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I remember playing Doom on my PC back in 94 using the keyboard and I wouldn't touch that weird thing called a mouse that came with my IBM Aptiva. I held to that belief for a long time. Then at one point I visited a friend who used the mouse for moving and aiming in Doom and I saw how smooth the turning was with the mouse and I began using it at home as well. It took some adjustment but today I happily use my Logitech mouse for gaming.

Using a controller is the same thing. It takes some adjustment and an open mind but then you also get a gaming device that makes some games smoother. Other games are best with M&K. I use what works best.

Also controls in Naughty Dog games suck ass.

Edit: used the mouse for turning, not moving in Doom.

No?! Really!? You mean that my opinion is just my opinion? Thanks for that! I'm sure everyone else thought I was speaking for the High Council of the planet Zeist or something like that, and not for myself.

I've no idea what realism has got to do with anything here, but I always said that with limits in RPG's are annoying and I would gladly be rid of them.

What about restrictions like the following two from the Baldur's Gate series:
* When a character reaches the edge of an area, you can't go to the next area unless the rest of the party is near (there's even a voice acted line that repeatedly plays when you try to do this)
* If you try to trade an item between two characters who aren't nearby, the game will not let you do the trade
?

(Incidentally, one possibility would be to make the limitations only apply during combat, but that has the drawback of having to determine whether the player is "in combat"; it would work better if combats were a completely separate screen, as is standard in classic JRPGs.)

Breja: Controllers suck.
Amen!

pkk234: Controllers are a must for platformers.
I never quite understood why people seem to think so.

I still play these old-school FPS games on keyboard only. Doom, Duke, Blood, Shadow Warrior, Wolf 3D, Heretic, Hexen etc. It just feels better to me.

What works best (for me at least) is the control scheme you're good at, not what people recommended

Since I am good with KB+M and absolutely suck with controllers, I will pick KB+M 99% of the time. Even if the game, devs, fanbase and everyone around me is screaming to use a controller. Unless the game is literally unplayable without it. Like for example Street Fighter IV where performing some combos on a keyboard is borderline impossible.

I happen to like controllers.

Actually, the one input device I don't really like to use for gaming is the mouse. I prefer to play games using just the keyboard, or just the controller; I don't like games that are primarily mouse-controlled, or that require simultaneous use of keyboard and mouse.

(I should point out that I don't play FPS games.)
Another earthshattering revelation is that mouse aiming perhaps makes games too easy.

And you don't play RTS games, I presume?
Keyboard and mouse are nice for precision and for rebinding and stuff, at the cost of aiming in FPS games being manual. Not much of a problem I suppose.

Controllers are nice for platforming and for old-school games especially. In fact, when I emulate retro games on my phone, I got a bluetooth controller to let me play them, as emulators don't have touchscreen implementations that can make most retro games workable.

And now I get to the touchscreens bit. The problem with touchscreens is that buttons alone aren't good enough sometimes, so you have to be creative with them through things like gestures or buttons that can be switched on or off by tapping. Once you nail an efficient control scheme for your game, almost all issues with it besides tactile feedback are gone and given a little practice, you'll get used to them.

I don't. The closest I've come is the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale games, and I just couldn't get in to those (though Icewind Dale was more fun than either BG game from what I played).
