In any other day I would have picked the remaster at all times, but after prior experiences with poor Remasters like Warcraft 3 Reforged, I now gotta be cautious with my purchase.

So to anyone that played Grim Fandango, Original (with mods that makes it work better on modern PCs, or Remaster or both, which should I pick?

As far as remasters go, Grim Fandango is one of the best ones I know of. Much sharper and better overall look, a greatly superior soundtrack due to live recordings, a point & click control scheme replacing the old tank controls that works very well...

Ironically I intend to play it via the tank controls, with a controller especially, since I grew up playing older Resident Evil games.
You can play the remaster with old or new looks, and with old or new controls, your choice. In my opinion both are greatly improved in the new version, but it's up to each player to decide.

OOOOOOH That is all I wanted to know.

I ask if I should pick the original and I saw some changes to lighting that I question. A lot of hit and misses in some places with the new lighting.

I'm a huge fan of the original game, but I'm not aware of any problems with the remaster that mean you should play the original. I think they re-recorded some of the music and I'm not sure if there's an option for the original version, but that's mostly nostalgia for me and not because I consider the re-recorded parts objectively inferior.

The remaster has more control options. Personally I would always use the original tank controls so that doesn't make a difference to me. The original supports tank controls (character relative) and "normal" controls (camera relative). The remaster adds point and click controls.

No option for old music AFAIK, which is the only reason I would play the original again as it is one of the titans of my childhood.

The remaster is pretty spot on. Wouldn't go back to the original at all.

Remaster has an annoying floating bug, which freezes the game. It is most often encountered in the woods.

I don't remember the details and workaround, but I recommend to play original with mods on ResidualVM / ScummVM engine instead.
Remaster is better in graphics - at least with characters, and you can alternate between both. And the comments from the creators are funny.
I agree with the general consensus, much unlike Monkey Island the remaster of Grim Fandango is great, imo it improves on everything without changes on the core.
I agree you can enjoy the remastered.
I'm pretty sure the remaster actually uses the original graphical assets but just rerendered at higher resolutions, so it's exactly the same as the original just higher res.

According to the making of video, they have redrawn some character and interface textures.

However, they have not touched any background images ( locations ) and not improved 3d-model details. Which would be a lot more visible in comparison to the original game.

Full Throttle received much better quality remaster from the same studio.)
low rated

and what is wrong with Monkey Island? The general game play is all there. The voices and music are great. Everything works well, as intended. The art style is different but no big deal, unless Guybrush having a ponytail is a problem. Knowing people, I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

The art style is ugly. Like, horrendously ugly in its simplistic, characterized... low-effort-misshapen-ness.
