tinyE: David Niven played him in Casino Royale. He died in 1983.
HereForTheBeer: A couple years back someone here corrected me that there was also an early Bond appearance on a TV episode of... I don't remember what show he said it was. Never saw it myself, and no idea who it was who played that first Bond. But that's little screen Bond.
And the original Casino Royale... haha - the movie spoofed the Bond films before there WERE Bond films.
Uh, the first BOnd Movie came out in 1962, the first Casino Royale came out in 1966.
The actor was Barry Nelson, the year was 1956."Casino Royale" was an episode of one the weekly drama anthlogies that were so popular in the 1950's and were responsible for some of the really outstanding dramas of that period, some of which were made into distinguished movies "Marty"(which won the best picture Oscar) "12 Angry Men", and "Judgement At Nurmeberg" were all originally TV Dramas .
The TV version was actually fairly faithful to the Novel and was a serious suspense thriller, the 1966 version was a spoof and took nothing but a few names and a casino setting from the film.
Niven and Nelson don't count, because when you talking about James Bond you are talking about the 'Official"? EON productions Bonds.
Then there is "Never Say Never Again" which is a long story.....
I am now watching the Last Season (On DVD) of the classic TV Western "Maverick",wtih Roger Moore as Beau Maverick, Bret and Bart Maverick's British Cousin. Moore is a lot of fun in that one.
Moore said he enjoyed doing the series, but was disappointed when ,after he signed, he found out that James Garner had quit the series in a contract dispute. Moore was big fan of "Maverick" and loved James Garner in the role, and was looking forward to working with him.
Moore stated doing the series was fun, but felt the show suffered greatly from the absence of James Garner.
