dtgreene: I know that there are a few games that, in Russia, would be illegal for those under 18 years of age because of a discriminatory law. From what I understand, Undertale and Stardew Valley would be illegal because they portray same-sex relationships (and in the case of Stardew Valley, even marriage) in something other than a negative light. I hear that the newest Sims game was rated 18+ there as a result of the law, and the producers of the movie Carol were forbidden from advertising it there.

Of course, in any country with sane laws, these games don't have any age restrictions, and they shouldn't.

Note that GOG sells both Undertale and Stardew Valley, and I haven't heard of any issues with those games being available in Russia.
And suddenly German law doesn't feel quite as bad.

Doesn't GOG have a Russian version as well? So they specifically target that market too. Hmm.

CharlesGrey: It doesn't. As a general rule, if you'd like to order an adults only game ( or film etc. ) in Germany, you need to prove your age. There's a few ways to go about that, but a simple webpage check-box or anything like that won't do. And for all I know there's no distinction between "indexed" 18+ titles or regular ones. The process should be the same, aside from stores not being allowed to advertise such games as I mentioned.

omega64: How would you prove that though.
From what I recall, a mail order will include a "Check ID" notice or something, and the postman has the right to verify the age of the recipient. Again, I may be mistaken.

That's correct, you're basically asked to show your ID at the door.

Yep, that's one way. Some stores are also fine if you send them a scan of your ID, but I'm not sure if that's officially a "proper" way to do it.
Are there nazi zombies in the game?

phaolo: Are there nazi zombies in the game?
Nope. Nothing to do with "depiction of unconstitutional symbols" in it... the game was indexed due to violence.
I think it has something to do kid zombies in the game - not sure on that one though...

Russian laws are not enforced across the board because the critical mass of stupid, contradictory and unconstitutional laws was reached long ago. They're just a beatstick to oppress inconvenient people. No one cares if you're breaking an unconstitutional law until you attract the ire of the government / church. Then yes, "you're a pedo because your kid play a game with Homosexualist Propaganda in it" might be a justification for church-infested Social Services to take away your kid. (It's still too stupid an argument for the secular police, so the cops would just find coke on you.)
If all the other "controversial" games here that are still available to GOGgers in Germany are any indication, GOG seems to have a "don't tell, don't ask" policy regarding the availability of "forbidden" games in a particular country -- if the publisher doesn't specifically tell them to lock a region out of purchases for the purpose of complying with censorship laws, GOG doesn't ask. ;D

Fonzer: Some of the laws in Germany is reason why i didn't go there either for gaming or fictional content.
Hey, on the bright side, no world wars or german occupation in the past few decades.

That's silly -- everyone knows you etch your words in soft clay, then let it dry or kiln-fire it. Chisel not required.
Kids these days....
Why would it be banned in a Muslim country?
I remember getting a phone call once because a kitchen appliance I bought came with a free knife and they had to verify my age before they could send it out to me...
Can't remember how they did it though, I don't remember having to post or email them anything. It may just have been an electoral register check.. and they had to phone because I was registered at a different address to the one it was being posted to so couldn't confirm automatically.

I suppose the issue with digital goods is they are available (or expected to be available) immediately so there is no time to perform such checks unless it can be completely automated.. plus they generally don't have or need your address (or even name in some cases, I don't think GoG requires a name other than possibly the one on your debit or credit card) which makes verifying your age automatically pretty difficult.
