The idea is similar to Steam or SA. You contribute 10 dollars, welcome to the forums. In the case of Steam/GOG, it would be software purchased.

You just need to spend $5 of your own money on Steam, whether it be buying games or putting it into your virtual wallet for future spending on virtual items or games.

I don't like it either but I do have to concede it stopped the flood of invite spam.

It didn't stop the invite spam but did slow it down.

I have to say the forum/invite spam was reduced immensely compared to what it was before then, it was really a madhouse. (not saying it still isn't, but in other ways :p)
