MaceyNeil: Is it just me or is GOG.com starting to really need filters on the tabs for it's main page.
I mean we have movies, pre-releases, now W.I.P titles, DLC & really would it hurt to allow year bands (1990-2000 for example).
I just noticed how annoying it is to look at the current 'On Sale' tab.
It really makes you recoil as a consumer not being able to instantly grab the information you need from a simple glance around the title.
For any given feature that someone can think of that they might desire such as this, there will
always be people who don't want that feature, and that group is further subdivided also to a subgroup that not only doesn't want that feature but also doesn't want it to even exist as an option for anyone even if it wouldn't have any material effect on them. So I don't think "is there a need" is the right question to ask because it's kind of a loaded question that will automatically divide the community to go ahead and argue about it between the people who might want such a feature and those who don't want it.
Of course there will be people who feel strongly both ways so one can skip right past asking people about it and simply just request the feature on the GOG wishlist in a polite manner with enough detail to indicate how it might work, or something clear as to exactly what is wanted, then perhaps post the link somewhere and let people who also want the feature go ahead and vote for it. GOG looks at the wishlist to help them determine what features people want and how badly it is wanted, so that's probably a more productive approach.
Having said that, I'd like to have such an optional feature be available personally as it would allow me to directly inform GOG of things I'm simply not interested in and they can optionally then use that information to avoid showing me things I don't want to see and instead fill the space with other things that I might possibly want to see. Over time such a system can end up filtering out a large amount of things that I don't care about and I end up more inclined to click on what's left and possibly buy something. All it really takes to do this is to put a button or link somewhere semi-prominent on the main page that says "Customize" or similar which brings up a page to specify some general preferences, such as "[x] don't show In-development [x] Don't show DLC for games I don't own and aren't on my wishlist" and whatever other filters that might be useful. They could further have the ability on each game page in the store to say "I'm not interested in this game" and it magically vanishes from prominent display in promos etc. to be replaced by something that might actually interest the person. GOG wins because their promos have higher relevance, the user wins because they don't see as much uninteresting crap they don't want to see. Others that don't want or care about such a feature win because they don't have to use it. The remaining others that don't want the feature and don't want anyone else to have it win because they are selfish negative people so now they have something to bitch and whine about which is what they actually really want when all is said and done anyway.
It's really a win-win-win-win solution! :)
