Actually, while I'm thinking about it.

I have no plans to avoid referencing events and people's behavior in past games, even as part of any scum hunting I may or may not do. I do understand that some players prefer such not be done, and while I respect their position, I'm not interested in trying to dislodge such behavior in any fashion from my play.

As such, if it will be an issue, then please remove me from the player list before the game starts (and therefore before it becomes an issue).

I think basing conclusions on past behaviour of other players whom one knows is unavoidable. That's part of the game if you keep playing in the same group. When I have the impression "Hey, (s)he does seem different from before" that might be a tell that something is wrong. Or that the player is trying something new. But ignoring that impression and artificially limiting the tools in my scum-hunting toolbox would be strange.
"Yea, (s)he does behave differently, but I'll totally convince myself that I didn't notice that..." doesn't work. Sure, new players don't have the benefit of knowing the other players. But they also have the advantage that no one knows them. So it evens out, I think.

anyway, as for the actual point you are making: as far as I understood from the mafia administration thread, the constant referencing of old games was something (among other things) that was specifically annoying poppy, so she came up with the idea of forbidding it. But since that Idea wasn't well received at all and even she herself backed away from the point, I really don't see why it should be an issue this game.

What do you say, Joe? I see you never commented on the whole discussion.

(EDIT: I see the avatar thingie much more of a potential problem coming up, since by the time we start the game, everyone is likely to have an avatar looking like the one of the mod, if this goes on... But oh well, one can read the names quite well, so it shouldn't be a problem... But which way could I make my space-skyrim avatar face, I see all four directions are already taken :( Could someone make a 3d model of it perchance?)

Regarding referencing (good) old games - I think it's right to do it; comparing what you know about people's behaviour and etcetera, but just everybody bear in mind that it might make things feel exclusive to new players - so try to avoid that ;)
I don't think it's particularly been a problem in the games I've seen, but making new players feel included and welcome and not-overwhelmed is something we should all be thinking about, and it doesn't hurt to state that here. I like to think it's something we're good at.

Regarding avatars: do what you want. Would it be fair to not change avatar/subtext more than once in 24 hours to (supposedly) give all players a chance to see it? I'll leave it up to you. General opinion seems to be people should be free to do whatever they want with their pictures and I'll respect that - we certainly seem to be getting a lot of amusement out of it.
