zeogold: What I'm trying to figure out is how these ones even FIND the thread.
avatar
skeletonbow: I'm guessing our good friend here never used the forums ever before posting the question in the OP, thus generating +1 rep, replied back to one of the replies a few hours later within the same day, then never looked in the forums again since and possibly never looked at the GOG website since. In the mean time, got a reply from Wishbone after his/her previous reply to Wishbone which has sat as a notification ever since. Presumably they just returned to GOG for the first time in 5 months roughly to discover a notification waiting for them, clicked on it and were brought here and then replied 5 months after the fact, garnering +1 more rep resulting in the 2 rep we see now. :)
Well, THIS guy, yes, but I'm talking about other threads where some new user pops up, it's his first post on the forum, and he wasn't even on the thread to begin with.

Yeah, I've seen them too. I think in general they are often just n00bs though as they generally have rep <= 5 or so, and it often seems like they're just not familiar with general web forum conventions and netiquette. :)

But...but how do they FIND these threads?! The search function is crap! You'd have to literally be digging back 200 pages or more and just happen upon them!

They might throw some search terms into Google like "gog.com <gamename> <problem summary>" or whatever, then get back 20 random threads that are like 5 years old or whatever and reply without looking at the date of the thing. :)

I suppose you're right, but...they suddenly disappear directly after that without a trace.
It's like they came here for the sole purpose of getting in some last word or something.

First of all, in this particular case it is the original poster who revived the thread. Maybe he/she hadn't logged into the forums for this many months, and now finally did and decided to reply.

For some others, someone like Tauto might still be involved, but his necro reply vanishes from between when so many people report it as spam. But since some other people have already replied to the same thread after him, the thread doesn't go back to oblivion even though Tauto's necro reply was removed.

And then the third case, people find old GOG threads with Google. Quite often when I search for information on some problem on some old game with Google, the top hits lead to some ancient GOG discussions, as so many people have talked about old games in these forums.

You don't even have to specify gog.com (or site:gog.com) to Google. You'd be surprised how often just searching for any info on some old game leads to old GOG forum discussions. At least it happens to me very often, like lately when I've googled for some information and hints for e.g. Fallout 1-2..

Well, this one, yeah, it makes sense.

That's what I thought until I checked the post numbers on several of them to see if any were missing and it turned out he had nothing to do with it.

That's the only thing that makes sense at this point.

Huh, wasn't aware of that. For some reason, I assumed we'd be somewhere on page 2 or 3 of Google.

Good detective work, I didn't think of checking those (post numbers). Yeah I guess you can check it that way if there are any messages missing from between.

...or then it is Google spying on me, and seeing that I tend to often go to GOG forums, they keep pushing GOG forum discussions at my face in the search results. :)

At least I notice this behavior in Youtube, I "magically" keep getting proposals to check some videos that are loosely related to some other videos I happened to see recently. Like when two weeks ago someone here linked to a video of some SJW raging in some meeting or show (and I watched it), then I kept getting for at least days Youtube proposals to other similar "SJW rages" videos, even though I wasn't searching for such. Oh well, google remembers...

Beyond exact keywords or faveing it before it disappears, no clue.

Clear your Google/ Youtube Cookies. problem goes away (unless you're logged in).
