== IMPORT ALREADY INSTALLED GAMES TO GALAXY ==

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the Galaxy logo button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library (click on the image of the game), then click the More button and select "Manage Installation" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

What have you done this time ?

After a few updates where Galaxy behaved and found all my installed games folders, this last update [1.2.20 ? Don't know, can't run it] simply stops with 'Error can't import Game db' and crashes.
That version will then no longer launch and keeps displaying this error.

I have reverted to the old version [twice] and attempt to run it again but, of course, "Galaxy is updating".
This it does and once again fails.

After having to re-scan all my folders somewhere near a half a dozen times because Galaxy keeps losing what it had, then going through the extreme pain of replacing the games yet again in my genre folders as it just throws them all in the root of gog.com on C:\ it looks like I am now facing the joyful prospect of wasting yet more of my life doing it YET AGAIN.

This time, to add insult to injury, it updates itself first to a version that will not run at all !

So now I have the new improved version of Galaxy that saves you loads of time that you might waste playing games by not running at all and, I suspect, hours and hours of rescanning folders yet again.

This is on Windows 7 32-bit. I still won't install Galaxy on my 64 bit machine as I don't want it writing just under 50,000 files into 'Program Data' on an SSD time after time.

Surely, all the crap and logs in Program Data could be stored in just ONE compacted db file ?
Does it really have to have a directory and sub folders for every single game install ?

50,000 or so files in one directory is not a good thing. No wonder it falls over so often.

The scores on the doors:

\Program Data\gog.com\Galaxy

7.89Gb
48, 182 Files
9,494 Folders

\Program Data\gog.com\supportinstaller

1.17Mb
129 Files
64 Folders

\Program Files\Galaxyclient

747Mb
305 files
72 Folders

THEN there are the game install folders themselves, which I suspect it has now lost once more.

Any advice, other than uninstall Galaxy and give up on it completely ?
Any way of stopping it updating without running it ?
Any way of knowing in advance which 'update' is likely to fail in a spectacular fashion so I don't have to go through this rigmarole yet again ?

If you are getting this with every update chances are good it's a firewall issue or something blocking Galaxy in the background. Do you have CryptoPrevent or something like that installed, it is known to interfere with Galaxy.

RTA: What have you done this time ?
They did do some database upgrades in this update (I believe) so something must have broken during that process. Only thing I know of that you can try is removing the database from the ProgramData folder and rescan your games. This should regenerate a new database.

I'm not sure why Galaxy would keep losing your games though, could be some of rights issue or something like that I guess... this for sure isn't a common issue that most people have.

Just want to say this, Steam has been doing great work for promoting Linux comparatively:

github ValveSoftware/SteamVR-for-Linux

Anyone who says that Valve isn't working with the Linux community doesn't really follow this stuff very heavily. I know of 3 open beta projects with Valve and Linux Desktops alone, that excludes their hardware, their OS, and their games supported.

I don't like the baked in DRM, but it is rather mild at least. Plus I get to play with a VR desktop environment, and help contribute to openly active communities for a better gaming experience on Linux.

Like it or not, GoG has fallen behind. It sucks, I like DRM-Free, but I'm also lazy. If GoG ever gets around to finishing their "work in progress linux port" that has been "Actively worked on for the past 3 years", then I might start trying to switch. But I've got 200+ games in steam now, and I'm kinda invested at this point.

RIP GoG, itch has taken over the spot of "underdog with big hopes". GoG stagnated. :(
When using the Galaxy client to download game backup copies, what type of installers get downloaded? Are the the GOG Galaxy installers (the game plus Galaxy with whatever differences they have to get them to try to launch through Galaxy) or are they the Classic installers that have no Galaxy integration?

Classic installers as far as I am aware...

boroncarbide: The most recent update, after it finished installing and restarting, rendered Galaxy unusable (maximised window that contained nothing). Closing Galaxy didn’t work — at first — but after manually killing all of Galaxy’s processes and restarting the client everything is working A‐O.K.

Liosan: I don't recall any bug that could cause this problem. Could you post a new issue at http://mantis.gog.com, attach your logs, and we'll investigate.

murkki: Comodo contains scriptinterpreter.exe as trojan.
Possible false positive'?
avatar
Liosan: I would hope so :) That executable is part of GOG Galaxy, something developed internally at GOG. It should be perfectly safe.

odisos: "Top menu won't switch to mobile mode in Galaxy"
Does this mean it will no longer switch to the mobile version or does this mean that it's now possible to switch to the mobile version? I own a Windows tablet and the client menu is impossible to use with touchscreen so I insist on an option to control the client over touchscreen. The top menu is also the only thing that doesn't work with touchscreen at the moment.
avatar
Liosan: Hm. The bug was that it would switch to a version which would work in lower resolutions, not actual touch support. I'll file a bug report on that, but I'll be honest - tablet support is not high on our priority list...

Liosan
Actually I remembered why the last update finally took. I had to restart my computer for the install to go properly. Why is this going on like that? Shouldn't GOG Galaxy restarting itself be all that's needed?

RTA: What have you done this time ?
Oh dear, that's a big set of problems :| I several separate things here:
- it fails to upgrade to the newest version. Could you report an issue on http://mantis.gog.com, and attach your logs there? If you still have them.
- I don't understand what you mean by "Galaxy keeps losing what it had, then going through the extreme pain of replacing the games yet again in my genre folders as it just throws them all in the root of gog.com" - as far as I know the only thing that could cause Galaxy to lose a game is if it where physically moved to a different folder, and that shouldn't happen by itself. Then again, I'm open to being corrected on this :P care to elaborate what's going on?
- The ton of stuff in ProgramData is an issue we are planning to fix, but it shouldn't cause Galaxy to break like you describe

Liosan

I ended up doing just that and clearing my Galaxy db, meaning that once more I've got to spend several days re-importing everything and re-filing the games folders in genre sub directories.
I doubt that I'd have this issue on my 64 bit machine, but this one is limited to 3.32Gb ram so with Galaxy continuously spinning my hard drives and taking a lot of ram to update those files which it has already 'updated' about half a dozen times already, I'm stuffed.
Why it continuously needs to spin my boot drive, I have no idea.
Once it stops being an SSD killer, I may migrate it to my 64 bit machine but I suspect that day will be a long way off.

It would seem that it installed a beta version, then a release version. I'm not sure why as I just have it set up update automatically and I have long ago unchecked the 'install beta' option.

Galaxy periodically trashes its own database. Typically about every third update. I have folders on four spindles. when it does this, I have to rescan each folder again. When I do, it takes a small eternity 'updating' files that don't need updating and re-writing every single game install into the gog.com root program folders directory, which I then have to move into the genre folders that I like to keep as scrolling through hundreds of games in alphabetical order in just one folder isn't much fun.
The typical time scale on this with Galaxy running almost 24/7 is over three days. I have to exit Galaxy from time to time as it doesn't like me doing anything else while it's going through the re-scanning folders chore.

I don't understand why it is continually accessing my boot drive [where the client is installed] when it is doing all this.
That's what causes me problems trying to run something else if I don't close Galaxy first.
So GOG gaaxy has failed to load for a number of days for me, I've tried reinstalling it a couple times but it is not loading. How can I play my games? I used to see ways around using Galaxy, but games I've recently downloaded say Try GOG Galaxy and I cannot get to download files.

Try unistalling Galaxy, deleting the Galaxy Folder in Programdata and remove GoG Galaxy Registry entries and then reinstall. Should work.

Other than that, the normal installers are right under the "Try Galaxy" Button and games you have installed with Galaxy have a shortcut in the game folder "Launch ..." so you can start them without Galaxy, too.

How many games are you importing at one time (it takes me probably 5 - 10 min to do around 35 games) and how is your folder structure set up exactly? Can you like provide a picture or something as I'm trying to picture this in my head.

By default Galaxy installs games inside the Galaxy root folder in Program Files (x86) but you can pick where you want games to install when you install them on a game by game basis or you can change this directory globally under the client settings.

You can also directly access a games folder by going to the game page and clicking MORE -> Manage Installation -> Show Folder.

It sounds to me like the way you are setting up your folder structures may be causing Galaxy to bug out and causing the database to be trashed every time GOG tries to perform updates on it. It may also be caused by you manually moving folders around. This isn't a common issue so I would say it unique to whatever you are doing.

Are the fps showed during normal play still limited to beta updates?
