nightcraw1er.488: Just a minor note, neither are really library management except as a secondary consequence. They are launchers. Library management is something a bit different, like collectorz.com. There is t much on that front. Playnite would be better at that if they ever release v9 with a proper database backend, then you can import/export and utilise the data (and stop out all the connectors to stores) etc.
jbdaytona: Semantics aside, I definitely want a solution that is a launcher and helps keeps my collection organized. Or I guess a better way to put it would be to say a launcher that displays my collection in an organized manner. And I want something that is pleasant to look at, which is obviously subjective, so flexibility in that area is appreciated. GOG Galaxy is definitely lacking on theme customization and offers no ability to edit meta data. But up till now I had not run into any deal breakers, and I love the default look of the launcher. This issue is frustrating enough that I'm considering other options.
If you are happy with galaxy mostly, then one of those two would be fine. Playnite is free of course, launchbox comes in two versions. In terms of metadata entry, well, neither of those offer great metadata entry, as they are built as launchers, you can’t add extra library fields and such like. I also don’t know about backend access to launchbox (say you want the metadata for something else), now playnite currently stores it in loads of Jason files which is fine for the software, but useless for other things. The version 9 has a proper database file which can be accessed in c# programs. I like to check my metadata against folder structure for instance. But yes, try playnite, you have nothing to lose there.

teceem: It depends on your expectations.
If Launchbox can do all or most of what you expect from library management software, then its original intended use becomes pretty irrelevant.
What's wrong with connectors to stores? You use them to get the data locally (if that's wat you want) in an easy way. Does their presence bother you? Is there a downside to it?
If Launchbox had a GOG import function years ago, I would've never bothered with Game Collector. It's extra features aren't worth all the manual work I've had to put in. Because of that import function, my games all have some nice screenshots. I don't even want to think about the crazy amount of work I'd have to put in to have the same in Game Collector.
A few years ago, I asked the Game Collector developer to implement "embedding" local videos (trailers, etc). The answer I got: Never going to happen - because he thinks that "nobody's interested in it". What I think: Collectorz wants to focus on "software as a service", and adding more offline features isn't in their interest.
Of course, if your expectations match then fine. I have no need of a launcher, I don’t have everything installed, etc. And as a database it’s far from useful.
Yes, I don’t want software that has connectors in it, wasted space and functionality. I want an organiser, nothing more, no launcher, no store linker, no fb integration etc. I wouldn’t trust metadata from a store. Also, if like me you have been building it up over decades, I have a ton of metadata that’s unique to me.
Collectorz I used for some years, but it’s proprietary nature makes it mostly useless, no real export features, no backend access. And yes, they are online mostly now, so I ditched it.
Currently using a spreadsheet, if I ever get time, will build my own database.
Do note, playnite doesn’t allow you much if anything in the way of user fields, different grouping elements and such like. Don’t know about launchbox, tried it a while back but can’t remember much about it as it was only interested in things I had installed,
