Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

- External links will now be forwarded to the system browser
- Wishlist option added to the LIBRARY menu
- Community option in the STORE menu

- Option to keep saves, when uninstalling a game
- Windows: starting the client when another instance is already running should now open the running instance (rather than displaying error message)

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Say, does Galaxy support auto-updates yet? The initial post obviously indicates not, but that was several months ago. So I'm curious if any of the patches since then have added that functionality. If not, what's the best way to patch games installed with Galaxy? I'm hoping the regular patches from GoG's library won't cause any issues?

Auto-patching is there, yes. For myself, every time a game updates, a shortcut for it is placed on the desktop again which I then have to delete. Bit irritating, but that bug has been logged. There were some other reports of auto updates triggering windows permissions. So they are not... perfect, but then again it is alpha, and all games (for me) have worked fine after the auto updates.

netosampaio: Thanks for the tip! but it didnt find my The Witcher and The Witcher 2 Folders :/
They've been updating the installers to make Galaxy-compatible installations, but if you installed these from the old installers, they won't be detected. Also, GOG have expressed no wish to change that :/

There are two ways you can go around that. Be warned: this is all experimental and may completely screw up your installations. Back up any saves, settings, or mods that may be in the folders. Galaxy will overwrite any files that do not match its own template. That said, the two ways I can think of are:

a. Try this guide: https://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_galaxy_client_closed_alpha/post1150

b. Create an info file in the folder of each game, then try importing through Galaxy again. It should recognise the games this time.
- For The Witcher, create a plain text file goggame-1207658924.info, containing the following text:
{
"gameId" : "1207658924",
"rootGameId" : "1207658924"
}
- For The Witcher 2, create a plain text file goggame-1207658930.info, containing the following text:
{
"gameId" : "1207658930",
"rootGameId" : "1207658930"
}
Alternatively, download the jpegs below (they're actually plain text), rename them as above, and move them to their respective folders.

Keep in mind, the Witchers are large games and Galaxy will spend A LOT of time verifying their files. Be patient.

The Napoleon DLC is not showing for me on mount and blade warband, is this a bug or just hasn't been made Galaxy compatible yet. Viking Conquest works fine.

Your guide is very well done and informative but a little over complicated as I was recently able to get The Witcher 1&2 detected in Galaxy by just renaming the folders. In case of the first game it should be "The Witcher Enhanced Edition" and for the second one "The Witcher 2".

After that you just need to set the install path to where the games are installed on your PC and then just install them via Galaxy, everything else will take care of itself automatically. The Galaxy client will install some files of around 680 MB for Witcher 1 and around 175 MB for the Witcher 2, then both will show up as installed in Galaxy. Ofcourse, before doing all of this its important to backup all the save files.

Thanks a lot for the help!! as soon as i get home i am going to try this!
I'm using it with Pillars of Eternity and it doesn't auto update to the lastest version even though the patch figures as an option.
Was a patch for Galaxy released? I'm getting an update problem error when trying to launch Galaxy.

I am at version 0.6.3.785 (Windows) myself and I received an update without a hitch. I would recommend exiting Galaxy and trying again and if that same issue occurs again, please file a bug report on Mantis with the usual logs attached :)

Hmmm was 0.6.3.785 after an update today though? I'm on that same version. I got the error twice, but now I'm not getting it nor any kind of update. I'm just wondering if it did update and maybe I missed it.

I am not sure as I don't work on Galaxy myself :) All I know is that I started it up, it pulled an update, and then opened up as normal :)

I would recommend filing a bug report on Mantis so the guys can see where the problem lies :)

Okay thanks for the help Judas. :)
Last Galaxy update (0.6.3.785) was previous Friday.
The only thing changed today for me is The Rise of the Triad in Galaxy library. Sadly client doesn't recognize my already installed 2.1.4.10 version and downloading 2.3.0.18. New folder installation name: Rise of the Triad (2013)
reported

and yes, it is v.1.5.1 : )

Point taken. I was actually trying to play it fairly safe with that guide, incorporating a clean uninstall step, though ideally Galaxy's micro-installers know what to do without it. Also, I somehow assumed that having a bunch of games installed in one folder, then changing it for some others, would cause problems with the former. At this point, that's probably a false assumption and your solution simply does away with it.

That all said, I'm still curious what the differences between faking an installation (your solution, my a.) and tricking Galaxy into importing (my b.) amount to.

I think your proposed method is definitely still the safer bet especially if there are mods or enhancements installed with a particular game as I am not sure which files exactly are overwritten by Galaxy. As for importing, it would indeed be quite interesting to find out how the process differs from the re-installation.

I have one more game that I would like to test which I have made some enhancements to but I don't know how to find the correct folder name that Galaxy will be creating for it. The game is the first Carmageddon to which I have made some custom configurations and updated the nglide version as well so should be interesting to see whether just renaming and tricking Galaxy into installing would overwrite those files or not. It something gets messed up than your method would be the optimal one for fake installation with Galaxy. :)
