Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Came here to ask the same question haha, would love achievement support on GoG for TW3! or maybe TW1 and TW2 sometime after full release of GoG Galaxy!

IMHO the current incarnation of GOG has pre alpha build quality.

It is still missing many options, like:
- account settings
- select your language and currency (currently not possible, you are locked into geolocating)
- no stand-alone installers
- confusing navigation / UI
- game directory is littered with galaxy-specific files

(yes I did submit a ticket)
So where am I to post feedback?

Here.
Nice new language settings! I tried to switch to italian in Divinity: Original Sin, it worked very well.
Good start. Anyone care to add to this?
We could have a Go-To list/post of sorts for "stuff" that we would like, need etc.

to address a few of these points
- I.. don't think anyone would want account settings in any alpha build, would they? I don't think this being missing at this stage is a bad thing. Rather the opposite? Possibly?
- Language just got added I think?
- Stand alone Installers are there. Its the primary way I use Galaxy now.
- UI seriously needs some tweaking. No question. Then again, the majority of what you see in Galaxy if the GOG homepage, which is also terrible by design (seriously, what were they smoking when they buried headlinds at the bottom of the page?) so I don't think this is really ever going to be as smooth as it really should be, looking at GOG's past attempts at design. :(

Well, there is the bug tracker for the Galaxy Client at https://mantis.gog.com. Sadly, it seems to have fewer activity than this thread here. This is also the reason why I wrote this bullet point list also here.

And how do I test these settings if they should exist?

HeDanny: - Language just got added I think?
As of 0.6.3.785 there is no option to configure the language settings for the contents of the client (I do not mean the game languages itself).

Yes, but there are not offered prominently as the new download method, but are "hidden" in the extras drop-down menu.

Well, my impression of the whole client is that it really needs work.
Currently, it is basically a featureless, bare window with an embedded web browser where alle the elements (except the black library listing - not sure from where it is coming) are provided by https://embed.gog.com/library/windows.

I am well aware that most work for the GOG Galaxy Client was invested in the underlying server-side infrastructure and the client itself in its current state is just a sloppy hack job where the downloader bits are taken from the current regular GOG downloader and a webkit window frame was slapped on top of it.

I am really wondering why GOG just did not take the public Desura client code from https://github.com/desura/Desurium and forked it (GPLv3) for their own usage or obtained a version from LindenLabs to build on it.

he only stuff GOG would have to do is the branding (there is an extra folder for it in the code) and inject their own GOG api into it, and voila you would have a sleek nice-looking game client. Yes, it also reuses desura.com for their game pages and account administration, but it would have prevented the revamp of the gog.com website which most people do not like.

If you don't wanna install the desura client, here are some screenshots (oh yes, this client is usable for Linux and Windows at least):

Sorry for the long screenshot URLs, but both show together in a nutshell all relevant features of the client.

PS: Some neato features of the Desura client which are not so obvious (most are done via embeded client, but they are functional designed):
- integrated user account page
- Scanning and integrating games also work for *installed* steam games (not embedded, native function)
- the small icons at the user picture are status pictures for messaging, site / subscription (RSS) news
- installed games are REALLY standalone, you can just zip them up and be done with them. No strange gog galaxy client stuff in the game directories
- yes the shop is integrated.

If GOG would consider reusing this client (what I don't think), it could just put the branding stuff and GOG colors into it and rewire their web presence into it (though I suspect another web page redesign has to be done, at least partially).

I checked your Desura screenshots and I can't help, but to be honest my first reaction to them was "oh my god, what the heck is this?". Galaxy is still far from perfect and needs work (mostly because the devs should find out where and how will they display the upcoming features, like - hopefully - profiles, friendlist, chat, etc), but much more cleaner than that.

Well, I do not want to advertise another digital distribution platform here (suicide), but my intent is to provide some input for design ideas and a pointer to other people who implement similatr things.

I think your ideas for friend lists and other steamy stuff may be on the todo list, but currently, the GOG Galaxy client really needs some serious work. Perhaps they should extend their design document and roadmap (if there is one) beyond the bare bones implementation "Gog Downloader with embedded webkit HTML frame alongside with a steamy infrastructure server-side".

So far I am happy with the progress of the Alpha. I think the main purpose of the Alpha would be to get as many games working in the client as possible and get the ones with issues resolved before moving to Beta, and I have only noticed Gothic 2 so far as missing when I go to install new games.

I am sure most of the features I would like to see added eventually have already been mentioned in the 60+ pages of these posts:
Ability to sort games in the client by name instead of install date

Games with multiple launch options - having the ability to easily pick which version to launch. For instance Might and Magic 4-5 World of Xeen has the version with full speech buried in the More drop down

Having a time played displayed (when launched from client) along with last played, like a certain water-vapor launcher
Hi,

I don't know if this has been posted on before, but this morning, Avast kept giving me the "Threat has been detected" audio cue and saying it blocked the client from a harmful webpage. Here are details:

URL: http://wpc.11df.edgecastcdn.net/0011DF/content-system/v1/depots/1207662663/windows/ [URL truncated so no one follows it.]

Infection: Win32:MalOb-IJ [Cryp]

Process: C:\Program Files (x86)\GalaxyClient\GalaxyClient.exe

Don't know if it's a false positive, or a corrupted ad or what...

It's a false positive. The link (to the edgecast) is legit, I can confirm that.
Is there a way to have the galaxy client recognize a game that is already downloaded? I have the client pointed to my gog game downloads, but it is stuck on Initialization for Grim Fandango Remastered.

Did you try scanning for installed games?
