Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

BKGaming: Yes I know this. I've installed nearly 60 games this way.

The way it works is Galaxy detects the game folder when you install via standalone installer and finishes the installation by grabbing the rest of the needed files from Galaxy's servers when you click install again inside of Galaxy. However they named the games differently in some cases compared to how it was named in the standalone installers. This should be fixable provided they provide a way for Galaxy's servers to check for multiple names for a certain game rather than just one, but that of course means they have to "know" exactly every instance of how the folder is named.

You are incorrect about one thing, the game can be installed in Galaxy via a standalone installer even if you download it inside of Galaxy... as of now you just can't start the installation when inside of Galaxy (well you probably can manually start it even if Galaxy is open). A lot of the installers are updated for Galaxy, and Galaxy will automatically detect the game after you install it via standalone installers. Not all of them are yet though.
Define cannot be started vs cannot be installed. I mean there is no way to use the Galaxy client to initiate the installer. I do realize that installing the game will result in Galaxy seeing it (provided the folders match up) exactly as it has since the 2nd or 3rd update.
Just one note on a rather minor detail: I hope in final version of the client we will be able to order games manually. So far it's either by purchase date, title or users reviews.

If "by purchase" filter is on, gifted games will appear on the very bottom. It kinda makes sense, but again if someone gifts you something you really love and recently, I'd rather go with "by the date of acquiring" (by any means ;) ). Ofc when "order manually" will be available that won't be an issue. So far I have my beloved Torment at the bottom's bottom using the only filter that organizes my games the way that I find appealing the most.
Have they implemented download compression yet? That's the real killer and why I haven't tested the client with nearly as many games as I could have.

Update: No, apparently they still haven't.
I have several games not show up. Leisure Suit Larry pack and a few others.
Galaxy just "upgraded" my Icewind Dale EE from 1.4.0 to 1.3.2058. Weird.

EDIT
OK. Patched back. Galaxy showed "up to date". But then I did "repair game" and once again - 1.3.2058.

Bapetacular: I have several games not show up. Leisure Suit Larry pack and a few others.
That's because not all games are currently compatible with the client. As mentioned in the first post:

"not all games are currently compatible with the client, so you’ll only see the compatible ones in the alpha version of the Galaxy Client. "

tredien: Hello,

To help with the testing, is there a list of games to be updated so we can test the update functionality? :)

Thank you!
To test updating mechanics, you can somewhat emulate this scenario by simply modifying (damaging) your existing game installation and then forcing game repair from the "MORE" button on that specific game in the Client. While not a real (self detected) update, the mechanics performed are pretty much identical to the update as the game is scanned, compared with the latest version in the Galaxy Content System and updated to it.

Something I just noticed...

If you have updates disabled on a game that shows up because it's standalone installer has been updated but the game simply says "Offline" instead of "Up To Date" , is a game suppose to automatically update when it's files are added to Galaxy's servers. I ask because a butch of games were added I guess today, and I have updates disabled for all my games but it did NOT ask me to confirm the update before installing.
To get updates for the Galaxy Client itself, do I have to restart the client or it happens automatically? I ask this because I ususally leave my computer on for a week or so before restarting. :)

For the current build, you have to download it manually via the website bookshelf this one time as the update mechanism wont work for this update. Once downloaded, install it and then assuming the next update can be auto-updated you just need to restart the client itself when the update is downloaded I believe. You never need to restart your computer however.

This is a very specific scenario as I understand you have added game to the Client that was not supported by the Client / Content System yet (which normally should not be possible, and hence marked as offline) while at the same time we're not really supporting the flow of adding standalone installers into the Client yet in the alpha (yes, it works but it's more of a temporary workaround which we didn't want to spend time on blocking it artificially, to avoid situations like you have described :).

Ultimately all games from the standalone installers will be supported by the Client while at the time of release, while also the importing option will be implemented differently.

Actually the Client should perform new version check once a day.

If you know there is a new update and do not want to wait, then as per skeletonbow's suggestion above, restarting the Client would be a suggested way to force the Client to check for new version...

I didn't add anything really. Galaxy automatically did. In my defense I just installed the game, you guys are setting up the standalone installers to function with Galaxy, all I did was install the new one. I can't make Galaxy not detect it. xD

I would advise whoever is charge of that to not update the standalone installers to the new version until your ready to fully support it on Galaxy then. :P
Finally did some testing since I installed the client. I noticed a couple of things:

- missing games (Tesla Effect, Tomb Raider 1+2+3 (maybe connected to recent decision to separate them?))
- tried to install a few games (5), 4 were successful, 1 was not. The game in question is Gabriel Knight 20th Anniversary Edition. It says broken installation, repair downloads a 0.0 MB update and does nothing. It also fail trying to download the game's soundtrack. It pops up a message, but it goes away to fast to read it fully. Something about no internet connection?

Disk full? I was going to try to install that just now to try and reproduce and I just realized I own the original 3 GK games and that's the new one doh!

Thank you! Also, thank you for developing something wonderful!

So...

I had a strange occasion when I installed AVP Classic 2000 from the client but I closed Galaxy (I thought closing the window would just hide the window but I was wrong) before the installation process would have finished. I found it strange that doing so did not stop the installation rather it finished installing the prerequisites for AVP Classic 2000 then closed their own processes. When restarted the client, it did a repair though.

Haven't found any other issues yet which can be considered as a major bug yet.

About the UI:

* I find the Search box a little confusing as it's not clear at first that it only search in your installed games (that was not just me, someone else even filled a bug report on mantis about that thinking it does nothing).
* On the other hand, there's no "one-click" way to search games in the Store. You go to the "Store" section then you still have to click "Browse games" before you can search.
* It could be great if I could go to the store page for the games I have. I sometimes find fun to check out the store screenshots, game description, user reviews and such. To do that currently, I have to go to the Store and locate my game manually
* If I put something to the cart then I go to "Checkout now" to visit the checkout page there are some suggestions below: "You might also like" and there comes a few games listed. You can add them to the cart by clicking on the price, but you cannot visit their store page to find out more about them. It would be great if clicking them would take me to the Store page.

Disclaimer: I know it's an alpha product and not sure if you need any UI things put in here at all as it's gonna change a LOT but getting these might be useful for later development.

Edit: another thing I noticed.. if I check out the extras for a game, there's no way to see if they are downloaded. So if I click ten times on the "Manual" for a game in the Downloads section it gets scheduled and downloaded ten times
