Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

While I understand the concept of alpha and beta tests (and what they can do to your system, as I had a nasty experience back in the 90s), I do thank you for putting your pen to the issue and making it clear for the general public.

Geralt_of_Rivia: Is there a way to opt out of any data collection?
Go to the app settings, you'll notice some of the options are marked as coming soon. You'll be able to turn every feature off in the future.

Fallen_Zen: ...
In the next update there should be an option to install the games without the shortcut on the desktop.
thanks

If the game is installing, there's an ABORT option under MORE drop down menu.
If the client keeps crashing, please post an issue to Mantis, thanks!

de_Monteynard: Well, I have decided to give Galaxy a try after GOG sent me an invitation. While my general experience is one of disappointment (even when taking into account this is a closed alpha), one thing that tickled me the wrong way the most was the fact that the client just created a folder "GOG games" on my C: drive without asking for permission! When I installed it in Programme Files, I expected that downloads of all sorts would be done there or at least, that when I started the Client for the first time, I would be asked about my install/download preferences.

My proposal to the team responsible is to give users the choice of folders they wish to use BEFORE the Client starts creating stuff on its own in places that may not be best suited for the task.

skeletonbow: That will likely be the case when the software is released. This is alpha test software however and can in theory completely destroy your OS within the realm of possibilities (although that's unlikely to actually happen). Embracing alpha testing means one puts their system, software and data at risk. Should not be used on a production machine nor a machine containing important data even if it is just video game data etc.

It'd probably be better if they made it so people have to answer a questionaire or something in order to get an alpha test key as it appears lots of people are installing it either expecting an finished polished product, or a near finished product without any glaring issues or major features. :)

Seriously, I don't think a lot of people understand exactly what an alpha test is for - not that they necessarily should by default either, but then if they don't they probably shouldn't be alpha testing or they're likely to become upset and not have their expectations met.

A good way of thinking about an alpha test is to have absolutely zero expectations except that it will destroy your computer and everything on it. Then when it doesn't, it feels like winning the lottery... or something like that. ;oP
Good points.

I expect the default install folder is located off the root of C: on a Windows PC to avoid permissions issues with older games that would attempt to write data where they are installed rather than conform to the way it is supposed to be done on newer releases of Windows that didn't exist when these older games were made. Doing this just heads off problems at the pass for users and it should be the default as such.
Just wanted to let you know I am loving the Alpha - there are a few bits of weirdness, but it looks really polished!

I have been using it on two rigs, a Windows 8 Laptop and a Windows 7 desktop.

On the Windows 8 laptop, nothing but minor UI gripes. I was having trouble with the scan and import folders feature, but Destro's explanation in this thread makes that make sense. Manually importing the folders works very well. It would be nice if I could manually import folders without opening up the larger description page, and it would be nice if the back button worked within the library (allowing you to look at the detailed game description page, and then press back to get back to the spot on the list you were at before).

The Windows 7 desktop is a little screwy (I know what the issue is, but couldn't be arsed to fix it) and requires all programs be run in compatibility mode, so right now it is not possible to run them through the launcher, unless it allowed me to set the compatibility settings within the launcher before it runs them (even with that though, because it allows me to go to the folder the game is installed in in a pretty straightforward way, it is still probably faster than navigating through explorer).

Overall though, really great - everything is really clear, settings are really easy to find, it uses reasonable system resources and outside of some fussy things about the UI I couldn't be more pleased with it. I am excited to see how it comes together in the end, but overall I am already pleased with it.

I responded to the same comment pointing out the likely reason why the default install folder is created where it is and why you would probably want it that way. Please see my post about that for details.

I managed to get to it. Problem was that the client often crashed before getting into the game page and getting to the abort-button.

I sent in a crash report using the clients report-feature when I realised what made it crash. I suppose that would suffice? :)
Download speed of the client is amazing, I have 250mbit connection and it downloads at full speed. I know that this is most probably because few people use the client, but I really hope these insane speeds are here to stay :)

Geralt_of_Rivia: Is there a way to opt out of any data collection?

skeletonbow: Good question, most likely they'll put an option in to disable that feature but it might be a good idea to throw a feature request in mantis just so they have it tracked somewhere. I'm not a fan of sharing data either generally but for gaming I tend to prefer a more open public or semi-public profile for that sort of thing. :)
There will be a master switch to disable features like game time tracking, achievements or auto-updating.
I didn't specifically signed for the alpha (because I was waiting for the linux version) but I got an invitation for having AvP2000, so I decided to give it a try using Wine but without success. Has anyone succeed launching Galaxy via Wine so far?

Could you please report it also to http://mantis.gog.com with steps to reproduce the issue, and also attach the logs?

Here's where you can find Client logs:
On Windows Vista or later: C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\GOG.com\Galaxy\Logs
On MacOSX: /Users/Shared/GOG.com/Galaxy/Logs

Good thing! It would be terrible to have nice features like that and no way to turn them off. ;-)

Ultimately back / forward will work across entire Client. For now it's limited to Store only and it's not in the perfect shape there either ;)
After a few tests, I'm pretty certain that Galaxy is not very unfriendly to small mods like Widescreen from Gibblerlings3 for Infinity Engine games. BUT, if you are playing with stuff like EasyTutu you may want to keep Galaxy far away from your installation. As in, do not import the folder because it will update the game and break it. At least until the Disable Updates general option is available.
