Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

Using the client right now and really liking it :)

Just a suggestion : that would be awesome to have a way to set the size of the text in the client like we can do it in windows.
Love love love the new client. Downloaded 4 games without problems (I'm guessing there's no pause button though, as I only see "Abort"?).

My main question is, do you guys keep playtime in your servers? I absolutely love the feature of seeing playtime statistics, as I have a spreadsheet that I update like once or twice a year with playtime data. Will I still see it when I reinstall Galaxy?

Lastly, when importing games that are already installed, does it only look at the .exe's filename or something else? I tried importing Thief 1 but it couldn't find it, even though I pointed to the folder it was installed in. Had to re-download from Galaxy to see it in my library. I thought it might have to do with the TDFix that was installed.

IronArcturus: Will the Alpha or Beta remove the old Galaxy "leftovers" from the previous builds? Like the first one with AvP 2000?
avatar
Fallen_Zen: Yes, those installers will be stripped of the GOG Launcher. You'll be able to use GOG Galaxy for AvP.
So AvP 2000 will receive a new stand-alone installer soon?
Seems to be working fine, I have a dual boot system, was able to scan for games on the WinXP partition, and play AvP on win7.

Will this automatically update games I have installed?

Overall it's looks good.

Well done

stevieknix: Can you pause downloads in Galaxy? If you can I have not found the option.
avatar
Fallen_Zen: No yet, certainly this function is coming.

Senteria: Hmm

- the games in my library won't scroll unless I click on the bar that lets you slide through your games first. Only then scrolling works.
- an older installed version of the witcher adventure game on another HDD is added to the galaxy client despite I already have it in there. This is creating a duplicate entry.

Fallen_Zen: Could you post an issue on Mantis about this? With logs if that is possible. Thank you!
Where do I find a log?

Just got it and it looks impressive. But I've got to use it longer to give feedback.

One thing that would be nice is that, in order to do something with the game or view info, you need to press the "MORE" button. It is quite annoying doing it all the time.

And when viewing your game in the library you own, there is soooo much space unused. I'd reccomend putting all the extras down there.
AND PLEASE: put icons behind each of the extras like in the browser version. It would be easier to find what you're looking for. Just plain text (like it is now) isn't that great.

Made an extremely bad picture with random games to make my point.

Haven't run into any techincal problems.

Pardon me for not reading all 92 of the preceding pages, but are vanilla GOG games supposed to work with the Galaxy launcher once they've been imported? Because if they're not enabled yet, never mind, but if they are, Sacred Gold doesn't, at least for me. It launches a game window, but never gets further than an initial black screen which turns into a gray screen and doesn't run the developer/publisher intros, let along the game itself. It locks there and the game process needs to be killed. Win7 64.

Edit: It works fine from my desktop.

Games and extras download folders are reset after each Galaxy Client restart.
Also - have found no way to download extras without installing the game.

tailsy64: Really, being able to back up easily and install without Internet access has always been my favorite thing about GOG.

DCT: Setup up? do you mean the installers?
Are you drunk? It's fairly clear that the files being referred to are the ones called setup_*.exe (on Windows; I don't bother with games on Linux, though I heartily support those who do).

In the near future I'd like to see them being replaced by *.7z and {setup,install}_*.{bat,sh,py,rb,whatever}, but the principle is the same.

Got the alpha key yesterday and been fiddling around with the client for a while now and I've got to say I'm liking it quite a lot so far. Obviously it's still missing some features but I haven't encountered any major problems. Still, I thought I'd post some small (mostly usability related) issues/suggestions. I know most of these have probably been mentioned already but here goes anyway (in no particular order).

- Pausing downloads + limiting download speed would be nice to have asap :)
- Scaling the sidebar horizontally would be nice.
- The drop-down menu on a game in your library has different items from the 'more' -menu on the game's page => these two should imo have the same items on them. Also right clicking a game in your library could show this menu.
- Clicking a game in your library doesn't have to send you to a different page. Imo it would be better if clicking a game would simply select it and double clicking would launch it/start the download. You could still access this page from the drop-down menu.
- The 'Featured' page on the store should have a search bar.
- The 'Community' and 'Support' items under the 'Store' tab could be their own tabs next to 'Store' and 'Library'.
- When posting a new reply to a thread, the new window that opens up has a generic icon, not the gog.com icon that the main window has.
- If your wishlist is empty: Clicking on your wishlist shows very shortly a text "You have nothing on your wishlist Explore our catalog of carefully selected games..."(and so on). This text is quickly replaced by sorting options, search bar and a 'No results found' -text. This only happens sometimes and is just a little distracting when the text flashes.
- Clicking the middle mouse button doesn't have a scroll icon.
- After clicking (or alt+tabbing) away form the client and bringing it back up, scrolling with the mouse wheel or typing (if a text field looks like it's active) doesn't do anything until you actually click on the window.
- The titlebar and borders of the window, scroll bars and eg. the settings window are generic looking.
- (EDIT:) When the shopping cart is empty hovering the mouse over it shows a completely empty box => it could simply have a text 'Cart empty'.
- (EDIT:) Clicking the 'Store page and reviews' -item on the drop-down menu of The Witcher 3 in your library leads to a 404 page.
- (EDIT:) The memory usage of the GalaxyClient Helper Application is a bit on the high side (eg. currently for me it's 320MB). (Not a big deal since this is just alpha.)

Anyway, enough nitpicking. Like I said these aren't big issues at all and I'm loving the client already. It looks really sleek and downloading games/detecting the ones I already had was completely painless. Looking forward to trying out new features and seeing the client evolve!

Well, I just got into the Alpha and must say that the client already is really impressive - the missing features that are "announced" in the settings menu are promising and the UI and general feel are (imho) much better then your competitors!

I have a mouse (Logitech G400) which has two thumb-buttons, which are by default bound to "back" and "forward". I got used to use those while browsing the web and other compatible applications, so I wanted to ask whether it would be possible to include this as well? :)

@saodhar
In the library, click on a game, click on more, download extras - on the right side there is a list of extras which you can click to download.

Have a good day :)

edit:
Oh and I have to add that I REALLY hope for a Linux version!

It looks like I cannot install it (version 0.7.0.860) - both "GOG Galaxy" and "Galaxy Redistributables Package" windows are stuck on "Finishing installation..." :(

I tried three times. First on default C:\Program Files. Second outside Program Files. Third on different partition. Tried redownloading the installer. No luck.

I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit. I know that Galaxy is optional, but at least I would like to take a look.

I don't know if this is planned but one thing I would like to see is a bit more information presented when I click on a game in my library. Some screenshots and the description from the store page or something. I don't like having to search for a game to see its store page when I already own it.

IronArcturus: So AvP 2000 will receive a new stand-alone installer soon?
When the client goes public, yes.

Yes, playtime is stored on our servers and attached to your account :)

All Galaxy friendly games have a specific manifest file inside their folder by which the client can recognise it. If the file is missing you can still import that game manually from the game view (MORE -> Import Folder, chose where this game is on your hard drive).
