Hi, everyone!

The Galaxy team is hard at work to bring you the Client application that will let you manage your GOG.com games library more conveniently. We’d love for the initial release experience to be as smooth and streamlined as possible for everyone, but releasing an app of this scope is no easy feat.

But before we jump in and hand out the alpha Client, we’d like to set some ground rules.

1) The key word here is ‘alpha’, which means that this is not the final app and not all functionalities are present. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the core tech in the Client on a wider set of computer configurations than what we can locally test on, so only core features are included. Below I will post a detailed list of what is present and what we plan to add in future releases.

2) Alpha also means that you can encounter some unexpected issues. If you have a metered connection (a bandwidth cap or payments per bandwidth used) or you’re currently playing and can’t afford a loss of game time, this might not be for you. In other words, if you want to avoid potential problems with the alpha Client, simply wait for the final release.

3) Please, please, please refrain from posting screenshots, reviews or first impressions, both on our forums or elsewhere, as this is not the final product and many changes will still be made.

If you’ve read all of the above proceed to the signup page: http://www.gog.com/galaxy/alpha

We will be sending out invitations in batches (along with some more info on how to install the client and report bugs), so not everyone will receive one right away.

HOW TO IMPORT EXISTING GAMES INSTALLATIONS INTO GALAXY

1. For GOG games installed using installers from the last few months (so called Galaxy-compatible installers)
Click the "+" button on top of the sidebar and select "scan and import folders" - it will find all compatible games within that folder and add them to the Client.

2. For remaining GOG game INSTALLATIONS
Find the game in the Library, then click the More button and select "Manage" -> "Import folder" and point the folder selector into the folder where that game is installed.

So I just redeemed my key for the alpha and...where do I go to install GOG Galaxy please?

Dumean: Is there a bugtracker or any other place where feedback can be posted?
Minor bug: When the GoG Galaxy window is smaller than 1100~ish pixels, a second scroll bar appears. Probably something that has already been noted but just throwing it out there if it isn't.

Check your library.

Destro: Games installed by the Client are not downloaded as standalone installers - they are downloaded in pre-installed format and then final installation scripts are launched to make sure the game registers whatever it has to register (installing redistributables, adding stuff to registry and whatnot). We do have an idea however how to make these folders backupable, in a way that you can compress them and then decompress and manually launch the script to make them working again.

However if you want to download “standalone installer” for the game and not “install” the game, please go to MORE -> EXTRA DOWNLOADS :)
I'm not sure I understand it correctly, so please bear with me...

What you are saying is that all of the (GOG) games which are already installed have to be *fully* re-downloaded, no matter what ?
Does that mean you're not trying to "patch" existing installations right now (as of the current client version), or that you won't, ever ?

Regarding the standalone installers, I really hope you intend to keep the GOG Downloader, since I'll continue to use it no matter what.
Galaxy did not find:

- rise of the triad
- Serious Sam 2
- M&B warband
- Valdis story

from my install folder. :(

Also why is it 'updating' dreamfall chapters by downloading 8,6gb? It was running just fine afaik. 8,6 gb is hardly a patch xD

Destro: Thanks for great and extensive feedback and sorry not commenting on every issue specifically but just wanted to let you know that pretty much all of the stuff suggested are on our "to do" list :). During alpha our goal is to get the core features right, then jump into beta and start adding polish and improvements based on user feedback :).
I totally get this. The information is there for review should you need it at any point. I'll look forward to future updates!
Hmm... I'm trying to connect a game (Dreamfall: Chapters) but it's asking me for a code?
Why does the client downloading a 200 MB size files for my Deadly Premonition? Is it downloading extra language options without my permission or am I missing something here?

By the way congratulations. You're on the right path, this should make patching process for the developers much easier and easier for us the consumer to manage our library as well. Since i'm running on a rather tight HDD, I no longer keep the standalone installer. I pretty much prefer the Steam way of pre-installed format; just like what you guys are doing right now. But the difference here, you guys give us another choice of keeping the standalone installer as well via "More -> Download Extras -> Game Installer".

Well, Galaxy is currently updating Dragonfall for me and I can't find an option to turn it off so it seems to be automatic at this time.
So far, I like it - the minimalist feel to it is very GOG and the opposite of the clunky, sticklebrick Steam client.

It only found two of my GOG games, although there were a bunch more in the main folder. Going to the main library, installing a missing game, aborting the installation and then manually choosing where each game was solved it though, with some downloading of various files to allow for compatibility (I imagine). *edit - that's an unnecessarily long way to do it. Just clicking on the game in the library lets you choose where the game is, no need to stop & start a download*

Look forward to seeing how it develops!

I also think it is a smart choice for the client to default by only keeping the Extras as the readable content, as the game installer is in .temp format that will be deleted soon after the installation process finished. By that way I'm able to save 50% of my HDD space, beside to me game installers are redundant and only taking spaces nowadays (I imagine that apply to majority who choose digital download as their main platform as well). Clearly you guys have done your bits on this part.

OdanUrr: Well, Galaxy is currently updating Dragonfall for me and I can't find an option to turn it off so it seems to be automatic at this time.
To experiment, I added Dark Forces, Battlefront II, and Freedom Planet manually. Worked launching and everything, even without connecting, but they all updated once I connected. Case with Dark Forces and Battlefront II, they did some sort of tiny update, Freedom Planet basically patched itself.

Interesting to try, since I play those as regular games, I uninstalled them and going to reinstall via their standalone installers. Really don't want them in Galaxy until it's final as I'm currently playing them. I guess it's going to be automatic for now just for the sake of testing and providing feedback. I just intend to keep this limited to Aliens vs. Predator 2000 and installing games I haven't played as much.

Feedback opportunity here, I'm typing this from within Galaxy. So if this post goes through, yeah the Community feature worked for me.

Coolio! Bonus points for making these downloads and scripts available outside of Galaxy, since that would really future-proof my games collection.

It would seem to work, yes, 'cause I wrote this from within Galaxy as well. =)

While trying to download the Jade Empire extras I now find that their names have changed to German (handbuch, hintergrundbilder, avatare, etc.). This is particularly odd since since the selected language is English. I tried changing the language and it's still in German.

I have Jade Empire as well. For me they are listed in English. For reference, mine is a new, clean, install of GOG Galaxy.

So far I am really liking the GOG Galaxy client. This makes my games much more accessible, especially for my wife.

Feature Request: It would be awesome to have a sortable/filterable 'year' field in the library.
