Try the DRM-free online gaming platform.

GOG Galaxy: our truly gamer-friendly, DRM-free online gaming platform. As we shared our vision with the world, we promised auto-patching, social functionality like chat, friends lists, and achievements. We promised our own multiplayer support and cross-play with Steam. Most importantly, we promised truly optional.

Today we deliver.
The GOG Galaxy client enters beta, open to anyone, with the most important functionality ready to try, test, enjoy (and break) at your leisure. We're proud to have gotten this far, and we know that we couldn't have done it without you all - that's everyone who spent months in alpha testing, that's those of you who talked to us about your needs and expectations, and it's every single one of you that has supported us since ever. So thanks, GOG Galaxy is for you!

With the GOG Galaxy Beta, you can install your games in one click and keep them up to date automatically, the beta currently supports this feature in all but a couple of titles available here. You can also perform backups easily by downloading a standalone installer through GOG Galaxy. The beta features a friends list, game time tracking, achievements, and chat. You can now talk to each other, connect with your group of friends, and see what everyone is playing. You can also try out our online multiplayer & matchmaking solution that, in select titles, includes cross-play: platform-independent multiplayer between gamers on GOG.com and Steam. If you download a patch that breaks something or if you just change your mind, the app will soon feature a unique rollback option to restore a previous version of your game.

Best of all, GOG Galaxy is optional. If you don't want to use any additional software, your experience with us won't change at all. If you only want to take advantage of select conveniences, you can toggle them on and off. It's all totally up to you.

You can sign up for the GOG Galaxy Beta and find out more on gog.com/galaxy, where we tell you about the features and answer many of the questions you may have. We'll be watching the forums carefully, so feel free to leave a comment if there is anything else that you'd like to know!

almabrds: As long as the games continue to be DRM-free and the client optional, I don't see any problems.

budejovice: Just as one example that is rarely mentioned, the client's mere existence kind of breaks the forums for me, which is a bit sad because I haven't been anywhere else much at all for the past year. I really dislike every single thing that the client adds to the user experience and there will be few topics about anything else. I'm not sure I will have the fortitude to wade through endless discussions of achievements.
I don't think achievements will be the subject in a lot of discussions. Maybe if they weren't optional.
Don't worry, the similarities with Steam will stop here, adding DRM would be a shoot in the foot. With a bazooka.

MIK0: There will be a standalone installer download for backing up games. But does that mean that if you want to autoupdate and also do backups you have to download things twice? That's not cool.
avatar
Destro: The only reason why games installed by Client are not backupable yet is that the install script that is launched at the end of installation is not stored inside the installation folder to make it easy to re-launch it upon restoring installation from whatever backup.

We plan to address during the beta, so every single of your installed games will be able to backed up at any time and by way you want, without any need to download the standalone installer.
That's nice but my question is how will it be handled? Backing up is nice in a DRM free environment only if I can re-add that backup with or without Galaxy...

Could you edit the newspost about the upgrades for the alpha client and that invites will not be sent instantenously? These questions have been asked here a million times, perhaps that would reduce them a bit :-)
I had the alpha, and Galaxy just updated for me.
So i entered my email for this thing now 4hours ago and still no email to get in.

Is this normal or is something broken?
>GOG Galaxy requires at least Windows 7
No thanks.

(Seriously, what does this thing require that only runs on 7?)
cool
After I "import" a folder into the Galaxy client, the games that are found (why not all the game of the folder?) are queued in the client. They are then in turn scanned and updated.

This scanning phase is extremely noisy on my computer: my hard drive is emitting a constant ticking noise while the game is scanned (probably due to the disk head seeking a lot). Other similar tools do not produce such noise (e.g. the Google Drive software when it scans local files for changes). I'm always worried by such noise, so I would be happy if it can go away.

Some other feature request:
- the left hand side pane could be re-sizable, so that it can display in totality the name of the game, useful to distinguish between multiple name of the same series.
- ideally, when I click on a game, in addition to the news related to this game, I should see the description of this game (including for game no longer available on the web site for which the description cannot be found), maybe with the comment. This would be useful for game that I bought long time age, when I don't remember what they are.

Normal.
Alpha testers are getting their update tomorrow, probably the invites will also be sent then or soon after :-)

a hard drive clicking is always a bad sign. I would do a health check on the drive asap. As it is first sign of it dying

That's weird... I've been running the alpha just fine under Vista since it began? Why are they now saying Windows 7 when not much has changed between the alpha and the beta?
