hedwards: This is a standard rule because otherwise you wind up with chaos.
It’s true that this is a rule enforced in many places, but it’s far from being a "standard" rule. Most places I go on the Web do not use this. None of the places I moderate use this rule.

hedwards: For the most part people just don't post in fora where they don't understand enough language to contribute in the appropriate language.
Are you really saying that Brazilian that can’t write in English should no longer be allowed to post on GOG forums? While I understand the principle behind this, I can’t support it.
Of course I’m not the one making the rules here, so my opinions are only suggestions ;)

Every website I've ever joined has that rule. It's not a rare rule by any stretch of the imagination. The places you're moderating are not standard places for one reason or another.

Yes, I don't go into the various language specific subfora and post in English there. Same goes for other language fora on the internet. I don't post English there because it's beyond stupid. It's unlikely that there'll be enough English speakers to get a reaction and more likely it's just spam that clogs up the internet.

If a Brazilian, or other non-native speaker, wants to post there, they should do it in English. Even if that means using an autotranslate program. If they can't write it, then how are they even reading it?

Linko90: I must remind you this is the English speaking forum, please post in English.
With the armed robot for intimidation, no less.

OK, now that I can see your definition of "standard", I understand your previous post better.
Of course there is no way I would agree with this definition ;P

I can read bits of German, Italian, Russian and Spanish, but can’t write in any of these languages (well, except a tiny bit in German). I wouldn’t be surprised if it is the same for other people with English.

Anyway, it looks like none of us will be able to convince the other that one way is better than the other, so maybe we should give this discussion a rest ;)

vv221: Not everyone feel comfortable writing in English… (including some native English speakers, but that’s another story ;P)
Not anyone's problem.

tinyE: what if they don't speak any actual official language?
Such people are unable to use this site in the first place, don't you think? :P

You must not read the rules of many fora. It's usually in there because it tends to cause problems in terms of SNR and just general enforcement of moderation.

Of course it's like that with English, it's like that with any widely used or important language. But, that's no reason to destroy the SNR and make it more complicated to moderate.

This is the 21st century, they can always use autotranslate tools to post if they really need to.

Stay classy
Come on, everyone should learn English. Even my dog speaks English! He always goes "woof woof" and not "hau hau".
