Recently on NeoGaf, someone pointed out the existence of a website called "Project Egg", which you can find right here

which is basically GOG for Japanese computer games. While the site does have an English option, it's basically Engrish, payment is in Yen, and you have to pay a monthly fee to use the service, plus the cost of the games. Despite all of that, I still find myself thinking about joining the service, just to experience those games in an easier way.

If I don't though (there are other ways I could be playing those games right now, but I'd still rather pay for them), what are the chances of GOG getting classic Japanese PC games? Not just the PC either, but systems such as the PC-9801 or the X68000.

Edit: It looks like there are around 100 games you can download for free as part of the monthly 500 yen fee and any games that you do buy are yours to keep if you cancel your subscription.

If their subscription model attracts users, the publishers won't have more reasons than now to offer DRM-free installers here.

That's a bit convoluted, but ultimately good subscription model. Usually they just block access to your account.

500 yen is about €4.5 or $5. Per month, it does not seem cheap to me, but I don't think I am the target audience.

By "GOG for Japanese computer games" I assume you mean a store that carries old games, and not a DRM-free store, because their client seems to be required to run the games.

If it's your cup of tea go for it. I don't recognize almost any games there, apart from Metal Slug and Fatal Fury, so it's not for me. I do admit though that if the games came to GOG I'd probably take a second look and buy one or two.

Computers manufactured by NEC and Sharp respectively. Sold in Japan only. They are akin to the 16-bit computers (Amiga, Atari ST) only sold in parts of the world. They aren't PCs by today's standard. Thus the games on that site are running through an emulator.

Given that most of the games are in Japanese only anyway, this problem seems moot.
