tinyE: Diablo 3.

It's a mediocre game that requires a degree in computer engineering to get a server for. XD

Yet people bought that piece of shit and they still do.

Seriously, they came out, offered a code that for $60 allowed you to rent a game which upon release, allowed you to log on at 3am and play for five minutes, IF YOU WERE LUCKY! :P

WTF!?

dudalb: A lot of Diablo fans think the much more modestly budgeted and hyped "Torchlight " games were vastly better games and had a much more "Diablo" feel to them then Diablo 3.
Yeah Diablo 3 is deservedly shit, but my pick for the should-have-flopped game is actually Torchlight. I mean, it is as if the dev team carefully studied everything that made Diablo 1 & 2 so simple yet addictive, and then proceeded to create a clone leaving all of that good stuff out. I haven't seen any other Diablo clone this dull and grindy.

HereForTheBeer: Having a difficult time coming up with anything.
Same here, but for me the problem is a definition of "flop". I usually take it to mean that something is expected to do great, but it fails miserably to meet the expectations. Were there high expections and lots of pre-hype for e.g. Gothic that was mentioned in the OP? I guess No Man's Sky could be considered a flop. I have no idea how much money it has made, but at least it got lots of bad press.

Also, I am unsure how much money many legendary games made, were they successful or not (in the publisher's mind)? Like System Shock 2, I don't recall for sure if it did ok or miserably. Did it flop?

ignisferroque: Hm... probably not deserved to flop since many people liked them but some where i dont really see why:

Diablo: Not really bad games, but the story was always weak (the lore kinda nice though), and Its clicking, nothing but clicking like a maniac, in the same environments for a thousand times.
i liked one and two but i never got how obsessed people became over 2.

Shadow of Mordor:
Played it for 4 hours and got totally bored with it, might be just me but i dont see the appeal.

Dead Space:
Didnt find it especially creepy (might have helped i guess) but the camera is annoying, the movement is annoying and so is the backtracking, like many other horror games its trying to "scare" the player with technical limitations, i never really liked that.

Minecraft:
Dont really see why people waste hundreds of hours building something ugly out of square blocks. Get Blender, its free and produces something actually aesthetically pleasing, probably in a smaller amount of time ;)

The Sims:
Taking the most annoying things about real life... and make a game out of it to fill that spare time? So boring ;)

Also all those annually updates series like CoD, sports games and so on, is there ever enough progress to warrant a new game? but well, people buy them.
Yea, shadows of mordor, really really want to like this, even forced myself to play through to the second map, but its just dull in the extreme. Same animations, same quests, same beasts. Played batman arkham asylum shortly after and that was better done. Dead space (all 3) were ok. Diablo was popular as it was new, bit different each time, and lots of loot to collect.

of Hellgate:London.
Hellgate london, another one I played recently. Dull, de dull dull doodahs. Two different textures, 3 or 4 different models hit randomize and you end up with the same levels each time. And you character controller was all wrong. What a load of rubbish it was.

Mobile phone games in their entirety deserved to flop due to the ripping off, of decade old flash games in the great cash grab, hoi polloi sell out.
high rated

And this summarizes the whole thread. A bunch of people complaining why they don't like certain games. Making your own taste the measurement for all people is already pretty shit, but the complete lack of understanding of why someone might like a game only shows your lack of analytical capabilities.

The Sims is a game made for women. Just like boys like playing soldier and killing things, women like controlling and manipulating people.
The Sims series, This War Of Mine, Age Of Decadence, Divinity Dragon Commander, Dungeons Of Dredmor, Minecraft, Assassin's Creed, Torchlight series, mobile phone games, Empire Total War, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, I could go on and on...

Fairfox: Broken Sword after, liek, teh second (which was variable anyhoohar). #5 is okies buuut #3 'n' #4 should have been franchise-killahs 'n' I don't get how it got taht far along or even continues! Teh devvies seem to port teh 2D ones (an' other serieseses) to maaany platforms so I can only imagine taht's where they makes their money to afford proppin' it up? Good-will from past entries, y'kno-kno?

Aaah, back when I used to, liek, act. play gamies. Espec. longer gamies 'n' not just pick up 'n' play ones. Ain't nobody got tiem for taht, nao.
To be fair, 3 and 4 were franchise killers. That's why there was a big gap before 5 and even then it had to be kickstarted.

And as if it isn't enough to hate a video game ( how the heck can you even "hate" a video game? ... first world problems much? ), they apparently consider their own preferences of such importance, that they think no one else should have enjoyed those games either, and it would have been preferable for the studios behind those games to go bankrupt, and everyone involved should have lost their job. Never mind that most of the games and series mentioned here are actually hugely successful, highly rated and loved by many.

Welcome to the GOG Twilight Zone!
Star Wars Rebel Assault 1 & 2

Gorgeous tech demos back in the days but already terrible games.

With that logic in mind Beethoven is shit today because he is less popular than Britney Spears.

By the logic of this thread, we would have never known of Beethoven, because surely someone out there didn't like his music and would have preferred for it to "flop". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On a more serious note, I'm fairly sure that Beethoven is still more popular than all the Britney Spears or Justin Biebers out there, at least if you're asking people older than 15. And I doubt anyone would dispute that his music is of much greater quality and value. Just like the general consensus is that most of the game series mentioned here are objectively of good quality. However, many people fail to grasp the concept that subjective preferences and objective quality are not the same thing.

Well, the first game was garbage but frankly the second one was a pretty good rail shooter. I'm under the impression that people simply hate it for being a rail shooter rather than being a bad game.

Anyway, my choice for a game that should have flopped: Empire Earth. The game is utter garbage. It's technically barely functional, it's riddled with absolutely moronic design choices and the way the developers handled the historical subject matter makes me doubt their mental health.

What's actually relevant is that Beethoven's works will still be held in universally high regard several hundred years from now while pop stars like Britney Spears or Justin Bieber will be recorded as social phenomena of no relevance to future generations.

I think your expectations of OP's and most participants' intention are just off. :P

I liked 3 despite it's box puzzles and haven't played 4 for more than an hour or so but plan on re-visiting it. George's voice acting is maybe my favourite game character though so I'm biased.
