So i've beaten the first Kao the kangaroo pc game since i played it the first time.
And it's a good platformer game and some platforming isn't easy, especially the beginning since i still needed to get used to the game. There is also some vehicle sections which needed a few retries since one mistake and you lose a life.
But overall i enjoyed it.
Very nice idea of using checkpoints which you can place. And you can save at stage selection so that helped.
The bosses weren't anything special. Though i really didn't understand what the third boss is working like since it didn't work or maybe i don't get it how to beat that boss properly.

Hexen 2

Managed to activate the sountrack, well worth the effort. It's amazing even though some tracks are recycled from older Raven games. But who cares when they're great?

Less wall-sniffing this time, more puzzles and finding objects. Some of them were obnoxious (Egypt) but rest wasn't pacing-breaking like I've expected.
Like all games in the series - there are no secrets, but you should still play like you're secrets hunter to progress in the game.

Got little trouble in Aztec-themed world (way too many corridors to lost my tracks) and Egypt, with sundial and calendar setup while searching for the urns.
God help you it you've lost the track to previously inaccessable place - you'll be wandering aimlessly for eternity.
Really liked Temple of Nefertum - when you compare old one with the new one then you should notice missing corridor. Nice touch.

edit - 2nd mage spell (shards spamming) sounds like pulse rifle from Aliens (vs Predator). Neat.

Final battle is the best in the series (Hexen+Heretic+addons), they can't top that...

Gibbous - A Cthulhu Adventure (2019) (Linux)

OMG, the story is tangled like Cthulhu's tentacles :D, but – it's a great game, do not miss this one! I'm a big fan of point&click adventures and usually I'm a bit disappointed by modern games. This one is a really good one. Hand-drawn graphic and animation is just amazing! It has great voices and decent variety of puzzles and dialogues. It's rather easy, which means not enough challenge perhaps, but it also means that the story nicely flows without any hiccups. I also liked the sense of humour – it's not Monkey Island series, but it really delivers, I liked this one much more than e.g. Daedalic's humour in Deponia. It even comes with Mac/Linux ports. Technically it's almost perfect product.

The only problem is translation – Polish one is bad and sometimes even misleading (like someone who made it never actually played the game, because some mistakes are obvious when you're reading them in context, during gameplay). Not a big issue considering that such game should be played in original version to keep most of jokes alive – I just advise to use subtitles only as a support.

In this expansion for the first game, you once again play Leonard....this time on a trip across america to various weird and interesting locales.

Pros

Some nice level themes and things to find and explore/look at.

A few new enemy types

More RR goodness to have fun with
(if one likes the original and wants more)

A few decent (mainly text based) easter eggs hidden in out of bounds areas
(need to noclip to see them)

Cons & Misc

Somewhat shorter and more linear levels than the original game
(this may be a pro or con, depending on one's tastes)

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (XSX)

Had this one on hold for when I got hardware to do it justice, as my PC would only do medium settings at 1080p for 60fps. The old consoles did not perform great, but From Softwares choice to go with uncapped frame rate really pays off on the XSX where it runs awesome at 1800p/60fps and looks great. So I'm very glad I got a second hand disc and waited.

This game actually bares little gameplay resemblance to Dark Souls and Bloodborne. Gone is any meaningful player driven upgrading and character building, with all upgrades baked into defeating bosses for rewards. Only skills using traditional XP to buy. So this game feels much more like Ninja Gaiden, some people say Tenchu but I've never played a Tenchu game. It's much more difficult due to the fact that the player cannot really tailor their build to adapt their own play style- here you learn the style the game wants or you won't succeed. There are also approximately 3 times more bosses and sub bosses than a Dark Souls game. It felt like you were constantly just jumping from one boss to the next with only a handful of regular enemies inbetween.
Then there is the stealth. The stealth is so powerful that you can basically one hit kill almost every regular enemy and just run away, hide and repeat. Only the bosses cannot be one hit killed, but even with those you often open up with a stealth hit.

The world design is pretty good, as is the lore and story- as usual for From Software. The bosses are mixed, some are great fun (like Guardian Ape) and some gimmicky (Divine Dragon) and some border on being outright cheaters. You will not fight all bosses in one play through, due to multiple endings and one important game choice that has you follow a totally different path with some different bosses. I followed what is considered the best or good ending, which also means fighting the hardest bosses.

One odd thing about the game and the developers is that it is now quite a bit harder than when it launched. The devs keep an eye on YouTube channels giving boss guides and have patched out certain tactics so they don't work. Now I agree with patching unintended glitch exploits or bugs...but many of the changes nerf what I consider legit tactics, almost like the devs get miffed at people beating their bosses. You play a lightly armored Shinobi not a Samurai, hit and run tactics would be an obvious genuine tactic, but in one boss fight for example (Owl) they patched it to give the boss a much larger range and made him faster to force you to slug it out with him instead. This type of thing almost made me wish I had of installed the game from disc and not updated it to keep the original experience.

It's still and excellent game. For me though it's not all time greatest game material like Dark Souls and Bloodborne, it lacks meaningful exploration and character build options compared to those games. It's good enough still that I'll most likely start NG+ tomorrow to get at least one of the other three endings. A second play through will be much quicker since there's little purpose to fighting optional sub bosses, and you know the tactics for all the story bosses already. I at least want to do the evil/bad ending as it is quite different to the others.

Realms of the Haunting - 2/5

Initially, I figured this would probably be a 3-star review, but on reflection, I'm struggling to think of that many positives. I'd say it often nails the foreboding/mysterious atmosphere, and the acting is better than I expected; but - by far - Realms of the Haunting's strongest asset is its ambition.

It's a unique blend of point-and-click adventure and first-person shooter - a novel concept, especially for the time. Sadly, it doesn't quite pull it off. Much of the game feels hampered by the clunky interface and awkward controls (even after installing the US patch, which eases some of the pain by letting you remap the weird default key-bindings).

The combat is straight-up not good - the enemies are never enjoyable to fight and the AI is perplexingly bad. The puzzles aren't much better - sure, there's the occasional enjoyable puzzle, but mostly, the puzzles just feel nonsensical and/or tedious.

The game really goes heavy on the story and lore - definitely not a bad thing...unless your story happens to largely consist of ridiculous nonsense. Did you know: crop circles are actually giant, demonic summoning sigils??? Well, now you do.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say is, every aspect of this game has numerous issues. I'd definitely be interested in some kind of a remake/remaster/reimagining. I think even some small tweaks and quality of life improvements could really go a long way.
Saint's Row 2

Had this game from old gaming magazine, they were switching from DVDs to keys. Sadly it didn't work well, in fact it run like a hot garbage.

Then GOG Connect happen. This one worked way better but still not perfect. Had to wait for new GPU but then new games catched my attention, then forgot about SR2.

Almost decade later it was time - game is finished.
My first mistake - installing Gentlemen of the Row. Enemies pointing at me with their fingers because pistols didn't spawn? That was pretty funny, see the 1st screen.
Game crashing in certain mission - not so much.
Reinstalled and just rolled with GOG version.

Music was hit or miss, either not my taste or something that you heard in the radio thousands times.

Some side activities were pretty fun and easy. Like Insurance Fraud - press LMB to enable ragdoll physics and throw yourself under the cars. Pray that physics starts acting weird so you get most points.

I have a hard times deciding whether to put these next two under "Finished" or "Quit", but they are both kind of open ended unless you're hoping for a 100% completion rate and don't have much story, plus I already put lots of hours into them, reached some kind of conclusions and I think there isn't much left for me to see. And putting them under "Finished" just makes me feel a little better, after all the time invested. ;)

Ziggurat

I only beat the game once, which for a rogue-lite is probably more the start than the end, but I saw the credits roll, and I can't imagine that future runs would be that much different. If I'm bored out of my skull one day or I need to vent a little, I might pick it up again casually, but I think I've see most of what it has to offer already. I was initially going to abandon it after a while and wrote about it in the Games Quit thread, but then pushed on due to the encouragement I got, and I'm glad I did. I also revised some of my earlier criticisms. It's a quite decent rogue-lite actually, and it can be fun.

I still wish there was a little more variety though. Nothing that could change from one run to another, or even one level to another, seemed all that exciting to me. The weapons are alright but didn't really feel very satisfying or that different from each other. In the run I finished, I was regenerating health so fast that there was hardly any risk for losing fights anymore, which felt great but also not very exciting. And there were a few questionable design decisions or oversights, like the stats of the characters and their equipment only available in-game, not on the character selection screen, and the game also never told me that you can access them by pressing the same key you press for leveling up, when you're not leveling up (totally different screens at different times, same key). And what I hated most, even though it is a minor thing, but a pet peeve of mine, was that the game autoselects your game language according to your OS on start - and does that again every time, even after you've changed the language in the in-game settings. So I was never able to see the intro in its original English language.

Anyway, apart from that it's a competent rogue-lite, just not the best, IMO. It's better to play it in short burst with breaks in between, otherwise it can get a little old quickly. I'm still somewhat curious about Ziggurat 2 though and will give it a try eventually. (EDIT: Okay, I just checked and apparently I only put 4 hours into the game not "lots", but it already felt like a lot, so ... ;) )


And... Forager

I'd usually think games like this are just time stealers, and the gameplay did not seem appealing to me - you mostly just hold down a button to harvest one resource after another, then tell machines to craft something from them and wait for the result. It's very repetitve and boring. And I uninstalled it again after a couple of minutes when I first tried it, because I wasn't in the mood for that and didn't think it was interesting. Then, another day, I decided I hadn't given it a fair chance yet and tried it again. And I got completely sucked into it and even began to have fun despite the tedious gameplay routines. The reason for that is simple: Forager constantly rewards your "work" with almost instant gratifications. You always discover something new, and a lot of it feels pretty cool and motivates you to work for the next surprise. Apart from the new machines and upgradable equipment, you also unlock new territories that often come with quest givers, puzzles or even little Zelda-style dungeons. And while there is no story to speak of, this kind of progress full of nice surprises managed to appeal to me.

Of course, the quests are always fetch quests and the Zelda-dungeons are pretty basic and not as competent as they would be in games focusing on that. Especially puzzles involving pushing blocks could get pretty frustrating due to the lack of precision and the bosses at the end were more annoying than challenging and could be cheesed but were a real pain to beat, either because of bad hitboxes or because they were damage sponges and my weapons weren't upgraded enough to hurt them plenty when I met them, so I had to chip away at their health. That's a bit of a problem with the open nature of Forager, I think. And you can't tell before you meet them, because the other enemies are pushovers. Also, if you die to the boss, you are teleported outside and the whole dungeon is reset, even though nothing in the dungeon before the boss was difficult. It's just a chore to have to repeat (almost) everything you did before, even if it only takes a minute or so to get back to where you were before. Plus, if you beat a dungeon or reach the end of it you are automatically teleported outside again without warning, regardless if you still you had unfinished business and wanted to keep exploring. And on entering a completed dungeon a second time, you can get stuck in it, because you are *not* teleported out of it again. Quitting and reloading fixes this, fortunately, because otherwise I would have been screwed as there is only one savegame per profile.

I also had issues with the control scheme of the game. You can choose between mouse and keyboard or gamepad, but none of it seemed ideal to me. I thought gamepad was more suited for the general gameplay and combat, but some functions were mouse-only (picking up resources on the screen just by moving the cursor over them, without a need for the character to be close, or removing weapons and tools from the quickbar), while others were much more difficult with gamepad, like placing floor tiles, landfills, walls, gates etc. That was also due to an inexplicable inconsistency, because placing machines or seeds was not a problem with the gamepad, you could do it freely, while walls and floor tiles for some reason could only be placed right next to the character in the direction you were facing (which in a 2D game also means just left or right, not above or below you). So I often had to switch controls between gamepad and M+KB, and I can't really tell what it's actually designed for, because it's clunky either way.

Something else I didn't like is that your main tool, the pickaxe, is used for harvesting resources, destroying structures, killing enemies and peaceful creatures at the same time, so you need to be very careful when you're hacking at something, so as to not cause "collateral damage" to your own creations or friendlies nearby. And it's worsened by the imprecise targeting controls and the fact that creatures tend to crowd in spots or get in your way somehow. Resources also grow very fast in the wilderness, constantly blocking your way and sometimes even trapping you and forcing you to hack your way out again, but I guess that's part of the gameplay - you can build roads to prevent that.

At some point in the game, when you have unlocked more lands around your base and lands with more aggressive enemies, some wandering specimen will sporadically attack your structures or animals, and the game gives some kind of warning sounds about that, but doesn't tell you where exactly that attack is happening. Which is rather annoying and caused me to run across the whole map everytime, looking for the perpetrator, and most of the times their attacks were quite harmless anyway, but one time I just ignored the sounds and they actually destroyed something good. At that point I hadn't realized yet that I could build ballistas to keep the monsters at bay. Once I did that, this problem became neglectable.

And the reason why I didn't realize that is that part of Forager's appeal is one of its weaknesses, too: it manages to surprise and delight you again and again by withholding information from you. You can only discover things by trying out everything. You can't plan ahead that much on your first playthrough because you can't see which skills will be unlocked by picking other skills and the skill descriptions are very vague. Later on you also get drones that accompany you or can be ordered to guard structures. They make combat a little faster as they have attacks, too, but I also found them a bit distracting, especially since some of them were bigger than me and when things got hectic I sometimes had trouble distinguishing my own character from them.

Just a minor thing, but while most puzzles were fine or even too easy, there was one that required special RL knowledge. It was trivial to solve for anyone familiar with binaries, unsolvable for everyone else. Now you could argue that many gamers are geeks who know this kind of stuff (and maybe it was so familiar to the developer that he didn't even think of the possibility that someone might not have this knowledge), but I still think it's bad puzzle design. IMO, puzzles should be solvable by using common sense and inherent game logic or hints, not RL knowledge unrelated to it, but YMMV (and your knowledge probably, too - if this puzzle would have been about Roman numerals instead, I probably wouldn't even have noticed that it could be an issue myself).

In the end I unlocked all the lands, beat all regular Zelda-style dungeons, solved all of teh quests and almost all of the puzzles, reached max level, unlocked all skills, built everything I could at least once, and the only things left to do now would be unlocking the last stages of equipment and weaponry and beat the void dungeon. But here's where the game starts to become very boring and grindy all of a sudden (I mean much more grindy than before). The endgame simply sucks, IMO.

You need to build lots of things and material that are based on legendary gems, very rare resources that you only get from fighting bosses - sometimes - and if you get them at all, you only get one or two per boss, but you need 80+ legendary gems in the end. And the void dungeon just consists of randomly generated, same-looking levels in which you have 2 minutes to defeat all the enemies. Every new level the only thing that changes is the number of enemies, they get more and more, and then some bosses are added, more and more of them, and if you die or run out of time, you have to start from scratch again. And this dungeon actually has 30! levels, and legendary gems only drop at level 24 and beyond. Suddenly this creative crafting game with Zelda elements and rewarding progression turns into an utterly bland and unimaginative Diablo-style rogue-lite game with bullet-hell bosses, if you want to unlock the last weapons. And the weapons are only good for these Diablo runs anyway. So that's when I decided I was done with the game, because I wasn't having any fun anymore and lacked the motivation to go the extra mile for 100%ing the game, especially since AFAIK there is no proper ending anyway.

Well, actually I made one last try by installing a mod that introduced tables to craft archeology items (which is another rare and random resource in the game, also pretty annoying but still manageable) and make legendary gems from them. These tables should have been in the game in the first place, IMO, instead of making the resources depend on luck and combat grinding. But even with these tables it was still too tedious to get enough gems when there was nothing else to do anymore, so I just gave up.

TL:DR
So what is my final verdict? I really can't say. I had quite a bit of fun with the game - for the type of game that it is, it does some things exceptionally well most of the times. The progression curve was great, the variety in tasks was nice, too, graphics and sound were neat (although sound can get a little grating later on, due to all the noises the crafting machines, drones, drills and monsters make all the time). And it was fun to discover all the things it had to offer. Plus, you can get creative with it, if that's your kind of thing. But apart from the disappointing endgame, it also left a bit of a hollow feeling, nothing of substance remained. It was a bit like fast food, only that I "chewed" on it for hours on end, because it is a really addictive time sink, and I could have played through a full blown RPG in the same time that I invested in this open ended game about foraging resources to build machines to forage resources to build even more machines etc. So know what you're getting into.

Games Finished in 2021 Part 3

In-between busy work life, I've managed to finish another game from my big backlog: Torchlight II from GOG. I picked Engineer class and decided to pick skills, which amplify the Cannon damage and use of bot summoning. All three Acts were finished in few 1 hour long sessions, while trying to finish all the side-quests. Unfortunately, I somehow missed at least one instance of Gathering the Robot Parts one. Anyway, the game was very good way to clear my head during the latest pandemic situation and I hope the third Torchlight will be released soon and as much fun as the first two installments.

I always enjoyed Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders (with gzdoom + neural texture pack) more than any doom game, after long years I forgot how great level design is. I would definitely prefer first three episode which have nice curve of increasing difficulty. Last two episode are based more on quantity, than quality... Either way I enjoyed it much, so I can tag this game as my 26th favorite game.

After long time, I finally finished Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun which I got some time ago free on Epic. I liked original commandos (+ BtCoD), so I was glad, that this genre continue…, but I started this games and find out, that it is very different experience. Medieval Japan can offer many interesting thing with its own culture, architecture and also way of thinking, but from story I felt a lot of western Japan. In my opinion difficulty is very unbalanced, first half of the games was extremely easy, then I suddenly stopped and find out it is not possible continue for me. After some time I found out some new game mechanics and for the first time punched somebody (what was probably possible since the beginning), in this moment almost all remaining missions became easy as well. Then I finally stuck at penultimate mission – I was so saturated by this game, that I have to take a two weeks break. After break, when I returned with fresh mind mission became very easy. In this moment I wanted to know how game ends, but did not want to continue, so I cheated and looked on internet how to finish last level as fast as possible. The worst in my opinion is, that game is prepared to be more difficult by collecting badges, unfortunately you will find out how to get badges after you finish mission for the first time and not all badges can be obtain during one playthrough. This can lead to situation when is necessary finish mission for three times. Simply - when I bought Commandos Ammo Pack I was more satisfied with it. At the beginning I liked game more, so maybe if I would play two missions, waited some months and then continued, my impressions could be better also higher difficulty could be better (started on normal).

Rune Factory 1, Nintendo DS: interesting concept and addicting, despite the overall awful UI (bad control, bad menu awful inventory management). I'm certainly going to play the rest of the series.

DeusEx GOTY. Not what I usually play, but the story line kept me going. I enjoyed it and I'm planning on playing more DeusEx games.
