Don't you think letting yourself play sad games while you're down will just make it worse? My suggestion is the Kingdom Hearts series.

Oh and it's different every playthrough so you can revisit it, get about the same emotional impact but in a fresh way.
Actually the end could fuck you up worse depending on what caused the sadness. Speaking from personal experience here.

Sorry about your loss and how you feeling.
I think there is a game that fits what you told on the post, the game is Eternal Sonata for the xbox 360.

It have a good story inside and at the end it will make you think about all the things you told before.

I hope things become better soon, my best wishes for you and yours.

No one has mentioned The Cat Lady yet? It's the deepest game about depression I ever played.

And there's also a beautiful freeware adventure game developed wit AGS called Eternally Us. You can download it here for free:

That's something I would not have expected. I've only heard positive things about the ending.
Not wanting to know why it's just your reply really surprised me.

Come to think of it there is one mental difficulty it could make worse by tipping the decision. Doesn't seem like you're in any danger of that from your post at least. Edit: Meaning toxicTom here.

Kholat is a very atmospheric and rather melancholic game experience. Not too long, and it's fairly low on typical Action or Horror game elements. It's mostly about exploration and soaking in the atmosphere of the world. Come to think of it, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is a similar game and might be an even better choice.

adaliabooks: I mostly listen to music when I feel like that, but the one game that comes to mind is The Banner Saga as it does have a good helping of misery and sadness in it..

Valiant Hearts: The Great War - a point and click game set in WW1 which consists of several sad themes. Comes with Uplay though.

This War of Mine - A game which shows the difficulties faced by civilians living in war zones.

Bastion - It felt a bit melancholic given the setting and conclusion
