Gamefront shutting down:
http://www.destructoid.com/mod-and-patch-hosting-site-gamefront-is-shutting-down-355502.phtml

"No reasons were given why the site was closing, however it was confirmed that any mods that had not been downloaded and backed up by April 30 will be gone forever"

I wonder if the site hosts mods for GOG games. :l

At least ModDB is trying to save as much as possible.

Sad news.

I used to use them in distant past but it is true I rarely went they in last several years.

I need to scourge the page and find anything I might like or need and backup it before it is too late.

Exactly, might as well warn people so that they can do so. :)
Some of my favorite mods are gone from other sites... I know I've dowloaded a few from Gamefront, but I'm not sure which. Hope I still have them backed up.
Not really familiar with the site (not really ringing any bells), albeit I'm sure I've sometimes downloaded something there, by being linked from elsewhere.

However, for me the big blow would be an announcement that a place like The Patches Scrolls would be closed down. Whenever I've tried to play some old PC retail game I have, the first thing has been to head to TPS to see if there are any updates for the said game. If there are not, then most probably there never were (or at least they can't be found elsewhere either). To me TPS appears to have the biggest archive of official (and sometimes unofficial) patches/updates for various older PC retail games.

If I could somehow download the whole TPS file database (at least patches for English versions of games) to my home machine, I would. Not sure how big it is though, several terabytes at least?

All this also reminds me one can't always expect everything to always be available online. People who preserve these things are just normal people with some vested interest, people like you and me. If everyone assumes someone else does the archiving for them (and everyone else)... as the saying goes, you are just an ass with an umption.

EDIT: And now that I decided to check that TPS is still online... who knows how long it will be, with news like these?

Dang, I wonder if I should start going through all my old PC retail games (those which GOG doesn't sell already), and make sure I have downloaded all relevant updates for them from TPS? I have already done that for lots of my games over the years, and keeping them stored also on my own hard drives.

Apart from the mods and patches that may be gone forever it's not a great loss IMO, the site was horrible to navigate and I only ever went there because I had to.
ModDB is better for mods.
To get patches is becoming a bit of a problem as The Patches Scrolls is the best option but is far from complete.
Gamefront?
Stopped using it when it blocked my country from downloading stuff off it.

Why would they choose to do so?

No idea, not only my country too.
I think a big bunch of Asian, some South American and European countries were also blocked.
I hope that this doesn't mean complete dominance to Steam's workshop crap or auto-updating. Manual patching should always have been the way to update a game.
Nooo! Why?
Shared this with the Dominions 4 mod forum at steam. No screams so far. Limited damage overall?
I wonder if gamefront is linked to gamefront.de? Both have different logos and the .de website doesn`t offer mods, but has a shop.
Had no need to use the site or others like it for many years now thanks to gog.

God I wish ... gamers and people that makes games possible would recognize this simple fact.
Much much more and everywhere.
