Matewis: To be honest, I've never tried it :P It just so happened that I started with the 2nd one, and because I found it so perfect I half expect it would be difficult for me to now try out the original. Mechanics wise though, it seems that the two games are pretty close together.
I suspect Disciples vs Disciples 2 is kind of like HoMM2 vs HoMM3. Some people will claim 2 is better than 3, and some(most?) will claim 3 is better than 2. It's easier to play 3 after 2 than it is to play 2 after 3, so if you're only going to play one then it makes more sense to play 3. But if you are in any case going to play both then it makes sense to start with 2, pending a risk assessment. The risk being that the gameplay features a novel mechanic/feel and it will only be novel once, so you have to personally decide if you want to have a novel experience with 2 or 3. It's a risk because the novelty adds to the experience, and it will be lost/reduced by the time you play 3 if you first play 2.
I suppose there everyone has to make up his/her own mind, but for me it makes Disciples 2 the more attractive place to start.
However this does not factor in the possibility that you already own one of the games :P I suppose it would be a great pity, or even injustice, to own 1 and to shoot straight to 2 without giving 1 a proper go :)
Now then, I'll give it a try sometime in the days/weeks, as my time allows. Like the OP said - I really like the genre but I suck so much at playing these games that I only bought them, but never seriously played them.

Oh dude it was so awesome!

It's a comfort to see I'm not the only one who sucks at RTS. I like the concept: setting up a community in a landscape with resources to harvest, buildings to build, technologies to develop and at the same time building up an army to defend themselves or conquering more territory, but the speed at which you need to build up and develop things to keep up with the computer factions and the need to keep check of multiple areas and multiple aspects at the same time usually defeats me.

I did manage to finish the El Cid campaign in Age of Empires II though. But I got checked as the Romans in Age of Empires I when I had to defeat a city (Syracuse?) defended by Archimedes' mirrors, in AoE II Jean d'Arc got stranded in Paris and with Rise of Nations I didn't even manage to reach industrial era before getting the shit beaten out of me by the enemy navy while trying to build up an army to conquer some ground.
Point & Click Adventures for me too.

I own 115+ on gog alone and have only finished half a dozen or so (almost all of which I needed to use a walkthrough for at least parts of them).

And I just keep buying them...
There are only 3 genres I really suck at:
Beat'em Ups
Racing
Rhythm

I usually don't even manage to finish the tutorials because I'm too bad.

Crosmando: Wing Commander series
Descent series
Terminal Velocity
Magic Carpet series

Not sure what you'd call the genre, "flying simulators" I guess. Even with a joystick I'm absolutely terrible at controlling these games.
Really Crosmando I expect your love of the Ultima games would also spill into your love of Wing Commander.

And I bought a Flightstick for those games. And they are much better.

And of course it would help ALOT if you tape of piece of paper on the wall with all the controls bindings of each game, because it has alot of controls.
Another one for RTS here. Command & Conquer, Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, etc. I never used keyboard shortcuts so my multiplayer matches are embarrassingly one-sided, and on campaigns I stick to easy.

Dogfights in an asteroid field are always a laugh.
Wow, I'm glad my dad really made me practice with RTS at a young age, because it definitely turned out to be the most enjoyable genre for me.

The day he showed me C&C was the day my life changed for the better, and all those times he kicked my ass when I challenged him were still awesome learning times :D
Adventure games.

I'd like to play many of them for the story, music, atmosphere and whatnot... but I get too annoyed if I get stuck to a puzzle for more than 10 minutes, especially if the puzzle turns out to be illogical and something you'd come up with by merely trial and error, by combining all your inventory items with each others until something works, and then trying all of them on the puzzle one by one...

In a sense, to me adventure games are the most archaic and simplest genre. If I were to make a game, easiest would probably be make some kind of adventure game. Mainly some if-then-else clauses over and over again, not letting the player advance in the game until they use the correct item in the correct place.

"Use an axe on the troll."
- "Nope, you died."

"Kick the troll."
- "Nope, you died."

"Ignite the troll with matches."
-"Tadaa! The troll is dead and you are not! Now you can go across the bridge!"

Magic Carpet should be played like Quake, with a mouse and a keyboard. Circle-strafe, shoot etc.

I still think Magic Carpet is as close to a perfect game I have seen, in that I can find hardly anything wrong with it.

I'm a bit surprised so many mention RTS, but then it might be many are referring to multiplayer. I probably suck badly at e.g. Starcraft multiplayer or even skirmish matches against the computer AI, but the single-player campaigns always felt so nice, except for some special missions with a limited number of units.

I generally find RTS game mechanism quite easy to grasp and learn.
Games where you control the individual movements of the sword.
First person shooters. I really want to play them, but they make me motion sick in no time. I think it took me a few months to finish Portal because I could only play about 15-20 minutes at a sitting. Even non-FPS The Talos Principle, with all the motion sickness controls turned on, made me queasy. So a whole genre passes me by. :(

But third-person shooters like Mass Effect (the only one I've played) are fine -- even the back of the character's head is enough focus to not trigger the motion sickness. I think I just need a horizon or a focal point, a non-bouncy camera, and then sit about 5 metres away from the screen.

Any recs for third-person shooters?

Red Dead Redemption. Not on PC though unfortunately.

Max Payne 3 is my highest rated third person shooter. It's very grim and violent though. Maybe Max Payne 1 or 2.

Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5 - Open world third person shooters.

Arma 2 - Third and First person. Very hard military simulation though.

American McGee's Alice - Very combat intensive, you throw flaming cards and things at stuff. Kinda hard to say that isn't a third person action shooter type thing.

Mass Effect 2 - Less RPG and more third person shooter, quite decent tactics you can use with force powers.

Hitman 1, 2, 3, 4 - Stealth, but quite a lot of third person shooting if you desire.

Rogue Trooper - Havn't played it myself, but probably would if I had a bit of spare cash.

Gears of War - Not on PC and not one of my favorites, but a lot of people like it.

Resident Evil 4 - Great shooter but your definitely not very mobile.

Silent Hill 2 and 3 - You spend a fair amount of time shooting at things.

Hitman's and Rogue Trooper are the only ones on Gog that I've mentioned, if I'm not wrong. That's the best I've got. ^^
