Is there a list anywhere that compiles game demos that were either partially or wholly original from the game they were demoing? I would hate to lose access to some of these and believe they deserve preservation just as much as the games themselves. Off the top of my head, I can think of:

Space Quest 6
Half Life: Uplink
The Stanley Parable
Thief II: The Unwelcome Guest (partial)

and probably many more I'm forgetting. Some of them are so well done they stand right along side full games; the whole thing with the lemon sorbet in the Space Quest 6 demo was better than anything in the game itself.
The demo of of Star Wars: Dark Forces was essentially the first level, but expanded to show off more stuff (iirc).
Project Zomboid (though that storyline may be back at some point)

The demo for Jedi Knight II was actually a whole new level, not present in the game. Quite a fun one too, especially on hard difficulty, where the final fight in the cargo bay is against two sith rather than one.
Rise of the Triad: The H.U.N.T. Begins was the shareware episode of Rise of the Triad: Dark War, and was composed of levels not appearing in the full game.
I just remembered- Starcraft demo was actually a prologue to the game, with all original missions.
The demo of Knights of the Chalice apparently is completely separate from the main game. (I think it's too difficult at the start, however.)

Wizardry 8's demo is the first area of the game, but with items placed that don't normally appear there (like Piercing Pipes, for example). It doesn't let you create your party, but it does allow unlimited advancement, and enemies scale to your level.
From the quick glance at the Wiki, Mafia 2's level in the demo is set in 1950, whereas in the full game it's changed to the point where it takes place in 1945. Huh.

Good thread, I always thought that the demos like these were unique free games on their own. Now the thought that I can't find comprehensive list of all of them now bothers me.

If i remember correctly, the demo of Age of Empires had 2 unique missions that were not included in the full release.

Thanks for the info! Have to grab it as soon as I can. Outcast is my favourite part of the series.

Right! How could I forget this! Especially since I ended up liking the shareware episode more than the "real" game.
Does Doom 3 Alpha leak counts?

I mean, strip the legality woes, and you pretty much got a demo that is very different from the final game. And is more playable than HL2 alpha.

Great topic. Would also be nice if the demo was one of the other docs provided if you buy the game. Rackup a wishlist entry and I will vote for it.
Sacrifice. No, really, it was a completely unique scenario that wasn't part of the main game, but you can play it as a bonus in the GOG version.
Fallout

Edit:
And Diablo to some extent.
