gssj85: any future game would be bought on GoG
avatar
real.geizterfahr: Nope. Every single game would be bought on Steam because you'd get Steam+GOG there and GOG without Steam here ;) Plus: Lots of gamers love their Steam client (think about the "No Steam, no sale!" whiners) -.-
No Steam, no sale!
No multiplayer, no sale!
No co-op, no sale!
No Mac/Linux, no sale!
No real-time, no sale!
No party, no sale!
No german/spanish/russian/klingon/gibberdish/etc., no sale!
No fully voiced, no sale!
No feature x, no sale!

Etc. etc. etc. ;-p

PookaMustard: Unfortunately, this idea won't ever work. Steam wants to stay to be a monopoly, so having GOG take over by such an offer would be like death for the service.
There's no reason anything like this would require co-operation from Steam.
avatar
dick1982: why would gabe give a shit about us? we're small fry. and that would require GOG to stop being DRM-free, OR steam to become DRM-free. steam won't give a shit as long as it's still rolling in money.
I think one of us has misunderstood something. Why would allowing people to register games they have on Steam to their GOG accounts require GOG to accept DRM or require Steam to be DRM-free? No one is talking about a merger...

Smannesman: This most likely will never happen since 99.9% of the developers/publishers feel like they should be paid multiple times for the same games.
I have the same feeling, they release a PC game I'm used to play for mobile and I have to pay, again. Doesn't feel right
low rated
There's a wishlist entry for that already with thousands of votes. To hand out Steam keys for every GOG game, which basically is the same thing.

But it's, of course, like the example Humble has set for us.

Throw Steam keys at your customers and surprise: you end up basically a shitty Steam key reseller.

You don't want a competition-free future.
...from GoG to Kane, from Kane to Seth.

gssj85: What if we could have on GoG every game we had on Steam (as long it's available on GoG of course) free of charge?
Thats quite possible. In fact, I can imagine it very well to be possible!
But you won't like it.

It would require both Steam and GOG to double the item prices.

Think about the future, GoG would be their gaming plataform, totally taking over Steam, any future game would be bought on GoG, long term run it could work to get more permanent GoG'ers! (more customers...)

Such deal would need agreement from developers of each game I believe, just an idea could be difficulty to pull but just imagine.
The Witcher 3 was a demonstration of how incapable GOG is as a mass user platform. Failed client, lost staff, inability to detect and fix security flaws, not to mention the influx of new users that GOG's servers and forums haven't recovered from.

There's a reason publishers prefer using Steam - it has the infrastructure and the user base. GOG wants that without the work involved to get it there. Stagnation is their main problem that they need to get over.

Other than they are releasing lots of games, most of which are good. So yes, galaxy is crap and can just be dropped, but they are not stagnating, lots of interest in the core business of getting games in and providing them drm free.

Desura went bankrupt with that philosophy. GOG will just make ends meet if it relies on new releases and new publishers alone. You as a user wouldn't particularly care about this as long as you got yours, but it's a horrible decision for them as business. You need to think beyond the scope of you as the user.

Are you suggesting the cast of the big brother TV show are in fact aliens?

darthspudius: I fail to see the point of this thread, except to boast an idea that GOG is better than everything. *blows on the record* This bastard keeps skipping...
For quite some time, you've seemed quite over-sensitive to anyone saying anything positive about GOG, and/or negative about Steam... And in a GOG forum for that matter, where it is to be expected many people prefer GOG.

Unless you like the idea of popping a vein in your head, just skipping such messages in the GOG forum might be a workable solution. You could concentrate on hunting down such evil-doers on e.g. the Steampowered forums instead. :)

EDIT: It is also an interesting to note that the OP's message, about which you are complaining, is actually downrepped...

I wonder just how fickle these downreps are...
