[This is a sticky post, it will be visible in every single page of this thread. It has been published in October 2020.]

Our moderation team decided not to take a side in the discussion since this giveaway thread was created by the community and, as long as there are no forum rules violated, is up to you, dear Gogers, to decide its fate. We will not set giveaway rules, edit the OP's post, nor lock the whole thread.

However, to make it easier for newcomers to understand the situation (about the OP being inactive and other), I will stick my own post right above the first one.

You are, of course, free to create new threads to start anew and make your own, clear rules. At the same time, please stay reasonable when crating them, as multiple new duplicates might make it even more confusing for many Gogers.

That being said, here you can find a post with dxenija's community poll to have better understanding of the situation: CLICK.

At the time of writing, open giveaway threads are:
- Massive Giveaways Blog
- Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic. (this one)
- Updated Itch.io giveaways

Be nice to each other *flies away*

So, if I install and activate it today, then uninstall it, it won't try to re-activate and fail when I try to install it tomorrow?

No, you can only install it today, after the installation, the game is DRM-Free.

We call that "DRM".

Well, if you'll extract installation files, it will be DRM-Free, but it's not an easy task. :p

You can't just "extract" the installation files, I believe you have to decrypt them.

What you end up with if you know how to do that is "DRM-cracked", not "DRM-free".

It's like buying a whole chicken, de-boning it and calling what you bought a "boneless chicken after you de-bone it". ;-)

It was possible just extract the installation files in previous version (they were in temp folder without any encryption), so no cracking or decrypting, thus DRM-Free. It's no longer possible in the new version, but people still tend to call it DRM-Free after installation.

People do like to be wrong, don't they? ;-)

Besides, no matter how trivial the DRM is to crack, it's still DRM.

I'd very much prefer these games not to be misleadingly called DRM-free at all.

Well, if you're so rigid, there are some games on GOG which are also DRM-cracked, yet they are sold as DRM-Free. :p

Also, many games on GGOTD are portable, so once you install them (which in this case is just extraction), they are indeed truly DRM-Free, cause you can use it on all your PCs and there's no DRM involved.

If what I'm sold has no DRM and works well, I don't much care how it got that way (GOG often sell games for which the original sources aren't available to build versions without DRM, and so have to resort to "blessed" cracks). If I see active DRM, it's not DRM-free.

I like to think I'm "correct" rather than "rigid'... I may or may not choose to buy a game which has easily-bypassed DRM. but I'm not calling it DRM-free.

If any of their games can actually be downloaded, installed AND played without using or bypassing DRM, then you can call THOSE games DRM-free. But not the ones with DRM of any kind.
avatar
mvscot: snip
First, you're not paying for them, they are free. Second, no one said there's no DRM, but it's true that at least in case of portable games, once they are installed (extracted), they become DRM-Free and that won't change because you have different opinion.

edit: to make it "easier" for you to understand what I'm trying to say - the game itself is always DRM-Free (portable or not), the installer (or file which has the installer) is not.

The original poster wrote "DRM free" for a game which wasn't.

If the installer uses DRM, it's not DRM-free, period.

EDIT: in particular, if a DRM-free installer is wrapped in DRM, it's still DRM-laden.
