So, remember my thread about Metroidvanias the other day?

While searching for remakes of these classics, I've stumbled upon this:

https://www.reddit.com/r/AM2R/

From their FAQs:

"Q: What is AM2R?

A: AM2R, or Another Metroid 2 Remake, is a complete remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus built from the ground up. The project aims to recreate the feeling of dread and isolation while providing the player with up to date graphics, tight controls, and new mechanics that bring a fresh new take on a beloved classic."

(...)

"Q: Where can I donate?

A: Absolutely nowhere, and it will stay that way. AM2R will always remain free as the Metroid franchise is Nintendo's intellectual property and stepping on their toes in that manner would be incredibly disrespectful. This is a love letter, not a measuring contest."

So yeah, a Free Open Source Metroid II: Return of Samus community remake.

I've played already and it's amazingly well done. You really should check it out if you're into classic Metroid.

Wasn't AM2R taken down by Nintendo some time ago? Maybe I'm confused and that was another game.
Worth mentioning that AM2R have a Android port, I seem to remember was dificult to find but worked flawlessly on a older (Kit Kat) tablet.

Was searching to find that answer in their reddit, and found this.

By what it seems, they aren't updating the old 1.1 version anymore (?), they're using one Community made Launcher which is fully open source.

The Launcher have one built in Apk builder for the source that you have, so I guess you can still play in any Android device.

Some shameless self-promotion: Birth of the Empires, basically a remake of Star Trek: Birth of the Federation.
FreedroidClassic / FreedroidRPG

FreedroidClassic is a clone of the game Paradroid, which was released on the Commodore 64 in 1985.  FreedroidRPG, on the other hand, is a sci-fi isometric role playing game based on Paradroid and inspired by Diablo and Fallout.

.Keys: GL Tron and Red Eclipse... Such fun games.
Unfortunately Red Eclipse's dev focus now in the Steam build rather than the the original. Played this game a lot. Really good classic FPS!
I used to play the heck out of Gl Tron, but Red Eclipse is actually new to me so I might have to install it some time...
Others:

20 games listed in this post: https://github.blog/2021-05-19-ludum-dare-48-staff-picks/

Don't know exactly if you can or how to compile the games from the source.
Maybe you can compile the Unity games with the right version of the engine, and I think I read once you need an app to run LÖVE games.
Other than that, I have no clue. Sorry.

Well. "Taken Down", but it's still being developed. There's even an art overhaul in the works.
Sticky Crude Man and Egg Buster appear to be open source.

Ancient Legends for Apple II and Apple IIgs (really old computers).

https://github.com/badvision/lawless-legends/tree/master/Example%20Content/Ancient%20Legends
The .dsk files are for the Apple II, and the .2mg file is for the Apple IIgs.

Also, it seems the repository this game belongs includes some other games, but I didn't check them thoroughly.

And it includes the engine for making games like that as well:
