as some of you might have seen we have a new Community Manager fables22

First off, welcome new kid on the block!

It seems that GOG finally found somebody (crazy enough) who is willing to try to do some moderation on our forums. It seems that GOG is willing to let us choose our own rules instead of GOG making up their own list.
This will/might also depend on our willingness to come up with some plans off our own and/or give decent feedback of what GOG suggests.

This will be a ongoing process ,me thinks, and will take some time and discussion.

The intend of this thread is ONLY as indicated Forum etiquette. Another thread for technical problems/wishlists might/will follow. (exception might be the downvoting system that is not sure in the moment and as rightfully pointed out by Cyraxpt some of our suggestions might also need some work from GOG). It is also up to us to present a case/desire to GOG

If you follow the link above you will see that there was already some discussion about it. But it was only a handfull and hence the reason to bring it to out into daylight. Please encourage others from the language based sub-forums to participate as well.

I will try to collect most suggestions and vote counts in the beginning.
The idea here is not censorship or similar (thanks GOG) but more of a light moderation.

Some suggestions and definitions so far by various people:

-moving political or heated debated threads into its own subforum (intention to allow for our usual more heated debate style ;) )
- banning to be enforced on a reason based decision, so always too think along the line: What, When, Why
- offenses to carry a ban: (my suggestion a 2 - 3 step list)
1. racial slurs, hate speech, scamming (with just 1 offense)
2. harassment (with the intend to make somebody feel uncomfortable) as not defined in 1, false reporting of a claim (abuse of the rules)
3. purposely ignoring the OP wishes (within reason)
- minimum offenses needed for the above mentioned (so taking into account having a bad day or similar ;) )
2 for class 1
3 for class 2
5 for class 3
Exceptions: repeated offenders doing it on a regular basis, so trying to avoid it those rules, banned on the first time basis.
Probation period: 3 month

Why the above mentioned WWW you might think. As the context is important for all those decisions.

As an example I take Political Correctness, quite often referred to as PC:
We are a open worldwide community and everyone has a different perspective. A FACT we have to live with. The intend of this is not to create a censorship or similar, but to get something back which is called Tolerance in both ways. So if Person A tells you to stop it, stop it. Person B might be OK with it. So again WWW. (again discussion)

This rolls over a wee bit into trolling, posting pictures and similar. The intend is not to kill this off, not at all (Hello TinyE, Zeogold, myself and others;) ). Here we WILL need a lot of discussion.

Stronger rules might be applicable for 'closed threads' like Mafia games or similar. (Discussion)

And before you all start moaning, but GOG dadadada, this MIGHT be a new start for at least a few things. I do hope that some of the blues will show up here as well, who knows ;)

I tried to gather everything out of this thread, and as you can see Fables22 is a sneaky one ;) if I missed something please post and DISCUSS!

And please do not post older links, do a copy&paste/summarize of your wishes/suggestion, would make my work easier to condense it later ;)

For me there should be:
- simple warnings (always preferred for normal users).
- short bans for a few cases (e.g: 2 days) that increase only with intentionally repeated infractions.
- perma bans only in extreme cases (proved scammers, recurring harassing people)

Nothing too structured, because situations may vary a lot.
Also, "purposely ignoring the OP wishes" seems generic and risky (too much power to silly OPs, OT would be fatal)

I would also keep Political Correctness out of this, except for the worst cases.
It would bring too much censorship and cause too many reports.

Also, the issue of alts and impersonators should be considered and adressed first.
Imagine the amount of fake accusations..

Another problem is the disappearing posts: deciding who is right will be hard if proofs cannot be found anymore.

The one part I would ask for with insults is for the person being insulted to be the one to complain. If someone calls me a retard, a fag, an asshole, or any kind of slur (are there racial slurs for Greeks btw? Which ones?), I should be the only one to say if it was or wasn't an insult. That would also take care of any fake accusations, assuming of course a user doesn't insult any alts/impersonators.

And do recall that some countries do use quite a bit of profanity during social interaction, as was evidenced with UnEpic and the game's profanity. What you deem an insult may not be one for the person being addressed.

LOL, I suppose I should get an insta-ban for my posts history (Snif, I miss the Cologne thread, I still have so much links to share.....). I already got banned from another gaming forum this year for this reason ("incitement to hatred and violence") so I wanna pre-emptively say goodbye to my dear P1na, Grargar, KingBradley, Leon30, Vicklemos and all the others who'll recognize themselves :o)

Aside from that and to be more practical, we don't know yet if Fables22 has the greenlight from GOG management to make changes on the forum so your thread is kind of premature (it's like putting the cart before the horses). Wait and see first...

The idea of banning is ridiculous when it will take all of a minute for that person to create an alt account.

How about adressing that first, like requiring at least $5 spent on the account before it can post in the general forums, before even worrying about bans?

Depends where you are in the act. At certain points it may be difficult to get much sensible out.

The thread isn't actually premature. It should be a new and consolidated thread about what we want for the forum, not a wishlist or "must-do" list. Fables did ask for some threads to be linked so they could get up to speed with what is happening, and I do agree that a new thread is better than digging through older threads.

Proposed solutions would also help (users can only up/down rep a maximum amount of posts per day, depending on their own rep/activity for example), but don't expect them (all?) to be implemented. I don't think fables has that kind of power (yet?).

First: You did post some aggressive comments, no doubt ;) But as I tried to make clear, Context is important. Nothing wrong with a healthy discussion. It was mainly aimed at posts like, you might excuse me: You fucking retared belgiums. Too stupid to ever get a working government :P in an offensive manner, so with the clear intend to hurt somebody.

No. Hiding the forum behind a paywall is not a good idea, for various reasons. What happens with developers that wish to bring their game to GOG, what about various user accounts used to run things, what about the new people who wish to learn about the store before spending money? What about people who join to take advantage of connect or a free game offer and have questions?

Paywalls for forums are bad.
