Ive read a lot of the Drizzt stories by Salvatore and while people can say they maybe boring or repititive (even fans point out certain books are not that good... ie the neverwinter books), they all do circle around one main charachter and if that is your thing (as it is for a long of fans of these books including me) then go for it (i like them because of this - tired of books with 60000 charachters and mini stories spread allover the place). They aren't the most cerebral of books so if you looking for something along those lines, don't read them.

rupert1435: Good evening people !

I read Moonshae book from Forgotten Realms world and it is simply great ! I would like to read all the FR books ! Do you read some of them ? I read that there are more then 250 FR books and 30 games in the world of Forgotten realms that is just amazing.

I am interested in Drizzt series from autor Salvatore. Have you read some ?
Some of the best books I've ever read. Not boring. A little repetitive but I don't see that as a problem. Almost everything in this universe is repetitive.

I started the series with The Dark Elf Trilogy and found it very good for reading and would recommend to start there and follow with Icewind Dale Trilogy and then the Legacy of the Drow series. All of the series are centered on the lone drow (dark elf) Drizzt Do'urden that has found its way to the light and away from the mad chaos godes that rules the Drow in the Underworld.

Tallima: They're hit and miss for me. But it's fun to go back to Faerun and read a bit.

I've yet to start them, but I heard the Dragonlance series is really good.
Oh yes, Dragonlance is really good. Recommend to stars with the Chronicles Series. What I like about Dragonlance series is that continously focuses on the main characters and later on their offspring and so developers the characters continously. Not to forget the fantastic stories.

ZFR: Yes, and I don't recommend them. Boring, repetitive and repetitive...

Maighstir: I, on the other hand, found them to be quite enjoyable reads.
I'm with you having started reading them when they were first released. I went through a ten year period where I didn't buy any of the books but I am back into them now and filling in the gaps in my library through ebay.

Some of the comments in this thread are a tad on the patronising side.

I've liked most of Forgotten Realms books (old one's prior to The Sundering because they killed off most of my old favored characters), especially Salvatore's Drizzt series (I love the Drow and elves in general). There are few exeptions like books based on Baldur's Gate games. They may not be the best or most epic out there but they certainly have kept me entertained and I do love some of the characters in the setting. I've also loved all games based on setting I've played all the way back to Pools of Radiance from 80's.
Yes! Finder's Stone trilogy books are one of the best ever! I recommend reading this trilogy and other other books in the FR realms by Kate Novak, and Ed Greenwood.

All the oldies are really good, and also the newer books from Sundering.

If not, read just Song of Saurials. Totally epic! But it's best to read all three books from the trilogy, starting with Azure Bonds.

There are good books and bad books in the series. I own quite a few of them myself, and do enjoy them. I would also suggest to look out for deathgate saga, dragonlance, rose of the prophet. These are by Weiss and Hickman, and whilst not forgotten realms, are similar. The drizzt set is good, haven't had a bad one yet, but there are a lot.of books in the series. One other thought is warhammer books, gotrek and Felix for instance.
Hmm ... well I will definitely read Drizzt books, your commentaries just made me want to read them although not all of them are possitive. As you wrote, I find more interesting story that is focused on one character instead of many characters and story lines.

Thanks for links to FR books - want to read them all if only I have time hh but hopefully one life will be enough to read them all.

I am newbie in Fantasy books - read just Tolkien, so it is hard for me to compare FR books with others.

I read a decent amount of Forgotten Realms novellas back in the 90s, there are some hidden gems there in between - and some pitfalls to steer clear from.

Avoid at all cost anything by Ed Greenwood. Trash, through and through.

R.A. Salvatore is ok for what he does, but some find him quite boring - expect the expected plot, the easily predictable and clichéd endings and characters.

Ironically some of the best stuff is the most commercial stuff, IMO, like the Avatar trilogy (by "Richard Awlinson") is really fun to read. Prince of Lies, it's sorta sequel by James Lowder succeeds the impossible, to make a good sequel.

But really, if you're going for Forgotten Realms novellas, you'll like most things - they're essentially written for you in mind!

Just remember the Greenwood rule.
I love Drizzt saga. The books won't pass to history as a writing milestone nor are a remarkable example of originality. They are generic clichéd fantasy stuff, and even if they get boring at some point, they are very entertaining. I find them to be pretty well written, given the "situation".
I read a lot of bad opinions tough.
But for me, they are among my favourite readings.

Atlantico:
I disagree, Ed Greenwood has some really good stuff. After all, he's the one who invented Forgotten Realms!
I haven't read all of his books, but his latest series in post-Spellplague FR seemed good! Especially the one I cannot recall exactly now, but it begins in a desert, with a girl who has special powers. Does anyone remember which book that was?

It's about Ed's girlfriend, who plays a "special" character in his gaming group, instead of being a mage she can just blast things at will. So by special I mean she just ignores the setting completely, which is ironic because Ed did create Forgotten Realms. Probably why he's perfectly fine with ruining it. Well, she pew-pews her way through the trite story of Spellfire, while occasionally stopping to do the sexytime with Elminster (Greenwood's avatar)

Shockingly, even though sexytime is always welcome, it becomes somewhat icky when it's between anyone and this guy:
