I think the first game I bought from gog.com was The Longest Journey, because I couldn't get my original disc version to work properly under Windows 7 (IIRC, the colour palette was screwy).

I also wanted to format shift a lot of old games from physical media to neat digital packages with all of the patches, tweaks, cracks and, for DOS games, emulator or interpreter already included. Sure, I could have done it myself, but that's a lot of time spent that I would rather not waste.
Well it was Saints Row 2 since it was given away for free, First game I bought was Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver then I bought Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2 on the same day. I am planning on getting the rest in the future.
The first one I bought was Blood, together with Duke Nukem 3D and Redneck Rampage (I think I actually stumbled over GOG while looking for Duke Nukem 3D). A few hours earlier I grabbed a few freebies, though, the very first one being Tyrian 2000.
I was going to buy Duke Nukem Forever, but since I hated the demo, I followed eDuke32's banner and got Duke 3D here instead, just to make a statement. Looking this cool and newfound site, I also grabbed Manhattan Project.

Out of curiosity: did you end up playing DNF eventually? I also first played the demo (on a friend's PS3) and very much disliked it but still bought the game when it was 50% off on Steam (which happened like just a few weeks after release) and I actually ended up enjoying it a lot. Of course it wasn't groundbreaking in any way and far from being a worthy successor to the Build Engine games but it was fun and a welcome change to all the uber-serious shooters in the years before.

Oh yeah, and I actually ended up playing a fair amount of its online multiplayer and people are still playing it. It's a pretty fun and frantic deathmatch experience.

Enter the Gungeon, it was on sale and I decided to join GOG. And now i can't decide what else to buy from all these old games, I think im going to save up for HoMM3, I remember playing it 12 years ago when I was a kid.
My very first game on GOG was a freebie: Beneath A Steel Sky or shortened BASS. (waving friendly to Vythonaut (another BASS player I know on gog ;-) ))

The first one that I bought was... a promo-bundle: Wing Commander 3, Theme Hospital and Syndicate.
The game that brought me to GOG was Colonization. The thought that GOG would do all the work to make it run on a modern PC was extremely satisfying, and reason enough to join the site.

The first game I got was Flight of the Amazon Queen, because once you've registered an account you got to try one of the freebies.

The first I purchased was Civilization IV, because it went on sale before.
Arcanum - Of Magick and Steamworks Obscura, but I still haven't gotten round playing it.
Wing Commander 1 & 2 and Wing Commander Prophecy during one sale.

I love Wing Commander saga and I first heard about GOG (and the sale) on the Combat Information Center page (wcnews.com). And now besides all Wing Commanders I got quite a lot of other good old and not so old games here.
Freespace 2

The game that brought me here? Arcanum. I wanted to be able to play it again without any issues, after finally upgrading to Windows 7.

Of course, it didn't go back on sale until the next big winter blowout, three months after I joined. At which point I finally bought it... along with about 30 other games. (And I haven't stopped since.)

First purchase: all the Ultima games

the german magazine "Gamestar" was praising Ultima 7 and 4, so I googled them; gog had a sale, I bought all of them and started playing Ultima 7 the same day.

Yup. My experience is pretty much like yours. Despite the initial hate (more like initial disappointment), after a couple of years I torrented it to see how it was after a few patches and under a whole new set of "expectations" (more lack of). Even if it felt bland and generic compared to the classics, I actually enjoyed it a lot, so I uninstalled and bought it on a sale.

Pretty much what you say.It is somewhat lacking, but I still have great good fun when I fire it up and want so shoot some alien bastards in the face. Even if I think the game tries too hard to be funny, I don't think it deserves all the hate it got. Generic? Yes. But still worth a play every now and then.

I wanted to try the multiplayer, but I think it's already dead (either that or I am unlucky finding servers xD). I really miss this kind of deatmatch :'(
