So, I tried to give someone a copy of Grim Fandango that I have sitting around in my account.

Two problems: The code was from 2017. And I'm pretty sure this was something I got from a sale so I can't just pass it to someone else.

And, well. That suck. Not only do I not know if a gift code is valid, but I have no idea if it's a gift code, or a "gift code".

And that's why I'm asking for a gift inventory. So I can more easily track the years old codes in my inventory, and ask GOG nicely to fob em' off to someone who doesn't have em'.

You can set filters to see only unredeemed gifts, maybe that's what you're looking for.

But I have to admit it's annoying that we can't see if a giftcode is expired or not in orders history.

Well, that would mean I have several unclaimed codes I don't know the status of. Stretching back to 2016.

You can check those codes on the redeem page which provides info if a giftcode expired. And there's no risk of redeeming those codes yourself. But it's an incredibly inconvenient way to do that.

Gog started limiting the freebie gift codes from mid-2017 onward. As far as I remember fantasy general from april 2017 was still unlimited, while the same fantasy general from june 2017 was one of the first to have limited validity.
The new policy wasn't immediately consistently applied to all freebies, so it's worth checking the codes from around this time, but you can basically expect all your "$ 0.00 FREE" gift codes from before that to still be valid, while everything from after can just be forgotten about.

Which feels like a missed op; I'd rather just be able to drop a mystery gift to someone I like.
