Curious thing, F2 and F:T are still there.

Because the PC doesn't have that luxury. They were sent into the wilds to save their community, and that community dies on the clock whether they care or not.

*However... the game needn't care once the vault dies; after that ~so what~ about the PC and their wanderings, it's no longer important to the narrative, and the game quits.

As much as I love the game and atmosphere, that's honestly one reason why I preferred 3, but I prefer New Vegas even more, because New Vegas is made by the remnants of the 1 and 2 dev team. So it has that classic Fallout feel <3
It does at that.
