gogamess: Masshole – Kill 300 People
That one made me smile.
Anyway, looking at the list, my question is:

Is it possible to play through (and beat) the game without getting the War Never Changes achievement? (Ignoring major glitches that might be found.) If the answer is no, then it isn't really an "achievement" and is a bad use of the achievement system.

That's a good point, though

I have literally no idea why some people still insist that achievements related to story progress aren't achievements. You did have to overcome SOME challenges to get there, sometimes the biggest challenge in the entire game is an obligatory one and it would be just stupid not to reward the player for it. Especially since not everyone beats the entire game and it makes perfect sense to distinguish the players who sat through it from those who didn't (and especially from those who bought the game and didn't even play it!).

The other thing of course is that achievements are a fantastic analytical tool for developers and the story progress achievements are the most important ones in this respect.

Also players are less likely to go hunting for the special achievements if they haven't been getting achievements at a steady pace along the way.

Edit: Here's also a nice post by Adrian Chmielarz on why they added achievements to Ethan Carter, even though he was reluctant at first (and regrets adding them so late). I'm not sure but I think all of them are obligatory
