If someone has made it this long without ever using Facebook then I'd highly recommend that they continue to do so. While Facebook does have a limited amount of utility, it is largely a massive distraction vortex that sucks out one's brain and causes a large number of hours of your life to vanish into the vortex never to be seen again. It's a massive hit to productivity both directly and indirectly.

I've been using FB since 2007 up until about a week ago when I deactivated my account to rid myself of the distraction as it just vacuums up way to much time unless one has ultra-consciousness and award winning self control. For myself I was never addicted to it, but rather it became something that I ended up doing practically every day completely unconsciously. Take it away (like now) and I don't miss it at all, but it just being there acted as a top level distraction vortex to me.

If you're someone who thrives on productivity - my recommendation is to completely avoid Facebook.

TwoHandedSword: What I like about FB is the special interest groups, which give me my daily dose of education, infotainment and humor. I can also better keep in touch with family and friends. What I most dislike is that the site chooses for me which posts come up first on my wall, meaning that there's a real risk of never even seeing something I might've been very interested in.
Yup, I explored this feature this afternoon and that's the kind of thing which can be useful. In some ways, it reminds of the mailing lists groups I was subscribed to in the late 90's/early 2000's.
