ZFR: Finish 48 new games (4 per month). My backlog is borderline out of control.

In the past several years, I tried to keep my resolutions reasonable and managed to follow through: learned to speedsolve a rubik cube, improved my brainfuck globe quine...
I did a calculation a few years ago and found that my backlog was longer than my life. That put some things into perspective for me.

I went through my backlog and knocked out many contenders. And now I try a game in my backpack and after 5 hours or so, if it's not panning out very well, it's uninstalled and I move on. And by 5 hours, I mean it might be 3 minutes. But if it's decent for 5 hours but didn't have any wow moments or no real strong reason to continue, I move on.

If it's a game I think I'll play again, I tag it as such.

My list went from 300+ down to 80 this year. And the majority of the games I wanted to try weren't very good (for me). I can't think of one I played over the past year that was on my list that I finished. I'll have to look.

So I couple that with: if I buy it, I plan to play it "next." That had dropped my spending and slowed the expansion of my backlog.

Now my backlog is manageable and I get to do what I love to do with videogames: explore someone's art, have some fun, I discover moments you can't find anywhere else.

That's funny, I have the exact same resolution every year.

Won't make it this year though, played (and don't even completed) too many long games like Septerra Core, Eador: Genesis, King's Bounty or Divine Divinity.

Bookwyrm627: That...is a heck of a lot of free time. Or else I just play games that are too long. :-|

ZFR: And it's... 37. I know the year is not over, but I'm flying to visit my family tomorrow for Christmas, and while I'll have a laptop with me I don't see myself finishing any more new games.

Sadly I couldn't quite get it done. But I'm not complaining since it was mainly because I visited the US for the first couple of months. By the end of May I had only finished 5.
Why did you necro a thread from 2018?

GameRager: As for next time, maybe try shorter games to beef up those numbers a bit? ;)
I could've done that. I've got several short ones on my backlog (EchoMecho, Jotun) that I could have played instead of 50+ hrs games. But nah, the day I start playing just to hit my numbers is the day I quit playing. It's something I do for enjoyment first and foremost.

How big is that big?

I've got around 200 unfinished games. Out of those about 30 are ones which I don't really intend to play: old DOS games that we bought because my brother liked them, freebies from GOG, extra stuff I got from bundles and such.

The remaining 160-170, looking at the rate I play games now, are finishable in 4-5 years, even including replaying oldies which I still do. So hopefully within my lifetime.

For me I hope to use Linux more and maybe even transition to using it as my main PC platform. Hopefully it works well.

Well I never meant you should just play short games to beef up your numbers....just that one can count them towards said numbers as they are games and count towards such goals, imo. :)

Lifthrasil: I always resolve to finally uphold last years resolution. And I've been doing that for so long, that I don't even remember what the original resolution was.

GameRager: Sorta like V'ger from Star Trek, then? ;)
Yes. That's me!
My resolution for this year is hitting 8k but not sure the wallet will like it.
I've had the same resolution for almost a decade now: don't make New Year's resolutions! Works pretty well for me.
1920x1080p. Hopefully I'll get a new high resolution display by the end of the next year...
Long time ago I used to have the same new year's resolution as everybody :

- I will visit grandma more often !
- I will save money as much as possible !
- I will have a healthy lifestyle and do lot of sport !
- I will start and finish every single games from my backlog !

Guess who never did any of that ? Yup.

In the end I think it’s silly to give yourself objectives just because a new year is starting, you should always do your best at any given time. That’s why my new year’s resolution is just to be happy and enjoy life for what it is, I don’t need more than that :)

Visit your grandma! Everything else isn't important. You realize that when it's too late to do anything. And then you're just sad. :(

All the best!

With the lack of much content for it I will ask: why not wait for a few years on that one? :)
What... Screw that I'm livin' HARD AND FAST

It's a strange world we're living in if everybody has a living grandma. Do you live in a world where no-one ever dies?
