If I understood correctly, the publishers used it as a measure to prevent people within the EEA from buying a cheaper key in some other EEA country and using it in their own, correct? So, was it an attempt to prevent people from using VPN to get the game for cheaper and then activating it on their main account?

Anyway, took them long enough. The prices have been vastly different across Europe for a while now, nonsensically so.

Could you provide an example or two for differences between EU countries?

Not arguing here, I'm genuinely asking :)

I've looked at some examples some time ago, but it was on Magog, which has been discontinued, so can't give specific ones now :/

But I remember that especially central and some eastern european countries had some of the highest pricings.
Back then GOG was the good guy and didn't do regional pricing or geo blocking. Now GOG has "local prices", same thing, but with friendlier sounding name.
