Delores was actually made as a tech demo for Ron Gilbert's new game engine. He just ended up releasing it despite it was meant to work only on limited technology.

While there are things I don't like in Windows 10 (I don't like the flat start menus with no subfolders, or how settings are dispersed to two different user interfaces), I don't think they are big enough to prevent me from using it. I think you can still upgrade free from Windows 7 to 10, can't you?

If you find Windows 10 totally unbearable for some reason, I think your only choice is Linux then. Or PS5. Or FreeBSD or OpenBSD, if you are so inclined. Or maybe that new sexy Mac M1 with an ARM processor?!?

Control Ultimate Edition, Metro Exodus and Observer System Redux have support for DX11 and DX12,
with DX12 these have exclusive RayTracing support.

It's mosty the lack of control and privacy that bugs me (yeah, that's tweakable, but it's annoying and not 100% permanent).
I'd settle for Linux + Win10 in a VM, but it would needs perfect GPU access and.. a damn powerful pc.

Ray tracing only works in DX12 and more recently Vulkan anyway, along with variable rate shading, shader feedback streaming etc. Some of these also require dedicated hardware support, so wouldn't benefit older GPUs anyway, which don't really lose much by sticking to DX11 when the option is available (maybe only some performance, but that varies from game to game anyway).

thats right, but you listed Cyberpunk 2077 as example, which runs under Win 7 with DX11 without ray traycing support.

That's news to me, to be honest. Could you please link a way to get CP2077 running in DX11 mode? I was under the impression it supports only DX12.

Edit: I've seen some indication that it works in Windows 7, but that's done using DX12, not DX11, in a similar fashion to how WoW got its DX12 Win7 support added.

No worries. I would have liked CDPR to include a D3D11/DX11 renderer as well for CP2077, to be honest, as a fallback... it also raises the question if the re-vamped ray-traced version of The Wicher 3 they announced they plan to launch will drop DX11 support and stick only with DX12. Which would be quite unfortunate IMHO.

If the game binary is "PE32+ executable x86-64" :P, I see nothing wrong with using DX9 when it is enough to do what needs to be done. But in reality games with simplified or less impressive graphics usually go for using pre-existing modern rendering engines that rarely still support it.

x86 is like ancient already think NT5 already had x86 instructions with a xeon processor (we talking about ancient times 1995 or something)

i can't believe i still read daily about the 64 bit instructions set and i still don't get it why people have so much trouble dealing with this none use issue.

Why look for workarounds for an OS that is clearly going down the wrong path when you can just use Linux? No big daddy there, just challenges to adapt to its quirks for first time users. But it does pay off in the long run, especially if you're technically inclined. Don't like one distribution? No problem - plenty of others to choose from.

Even the state of gaming on Linux using translation layers has vastly improved. Just do yourself a favor and get an AMD GPU if you plan on playing anything exclusive to DX12.
