Does anyone know of a way to make the download rate faster? Whether with my browser or the gog downloader, the best I get is 670 kb/s. It is ridiculous.

Wifi or straight connection?. Anything else running off network?. Whats speeds like when browsing and downloading other things? (only times i ever have problems downloading off GOG -- using the downloader is when GOG launches a sale... )

Sometimes it's slow. You can always try to restart the download. The GOG servers themselves support fast downloads - I've gotten upwards of 500Mbps from them. Try non-peak hours; since there's a sale going on they may be busy enough that stuff slows down a little.

Plus, you know, set to download, turn off the display, and go to sleep. When you wake up, you've got your files. Who cares what the download speed was at that point?

Its a straight connection. I haven't tried downloading anything anywhere else except Steam and there it is the same rate. Browsing though is lighting fast.

Downloading from Steam is the same speed as downloading from GOG? Then the problem is on your end. First, are you on a 1 megabit connection? You can check at, say, speedtest.net. If your connection is supposed to be faster but you can't hit a megabit (and be sure to differentiate megabits from megabytes) then you should call your ISP.

Thanks for your help, I'll give that a try.

First world problems.
I hardly get over 20kb/s.
Btw you should use Internet Download Manager and goto Option ->Connection ->Default max. conn. number and set it to 16. You may get slight increase in speed.
But if speed will be NOT more than max speed provided by your ISP.

Probably that's how much your provider allows you as download speed.

First of all, you need to understand the transformation process, as that's what most people don't get.

1 Byte = 8 bits

When we are talking about download speeds, we are talking in kbps, kilobits/second. But modems have their capacities calculated in kBps or MB/s, those being kilobytes/second, respectively megabytes/second.

So, let's say that my provider is giving you 5 MB/s (that's probably your case). Well, my download speed that will be shown by OS will be in kbps, so, to check it based on my provider, i need to transform it from Bytes into bits. So, for an 6 MB/s, my maximum download speed will be 0,625 mbps, 625 kbps. That's an roughly approximate, as the practical values are usually lower. But, if you are paying for 5MB/s and you are getting 600 kbps as constant download speed, you are getting what you payed for.

Yes, there should be a small plastic handle which you can pull out of the back of the computer, if you turn this quickly you will get faster speeds.

Seriously though, you get what you pay for, buy a faster package if needed, but 670kbs isn't bad, I have the fastest package I could find and only get ~1.0mbs (although I can have up to 6 streams at that speed).

Yes, I used to leave downloads running, but I have noticed in the last few months that if I leave Firefox downloading, and I turn the monitor off, after a certain time period I come back and find Firefox has shut itself down, and restarted (just the application), and the downloads didn't finish. Don't know what they changed there.

That's 1.7 Gb / day. And I thought my 250kb/s, 900Mb/h, "I'll just leave the computer on during the night and maybe that 5Gb download will be finished when I wake up" internet connection was bad. Ouch.
I imagine you don't buy too many 20-to-60 Gb games? ^^

Sorry, not a native English speaker. It looked more logical in my mind.

Well it's the maximum speed. Most of time it remains less than it.
I could mostly download 700MB a day.
I do buy 20-to-60 GB games although it takes me months to download full game.
However I can't play those on first day.

Luckly when I visit my college they have their own server and speed is 100Mb/s.
It's works for me as I still have contacts there.

ugh - feeling for you there ! Having 20 KB/s would reset me back to 1996 here so basically a trip back 20 years in time ^^ and even then it already felt utterly slow and nowadays it must be a real pain even for normal browsing?!?! or are you only throttled on/for downloading and get better speeds while you are just surfing?
Hearing stories like that really makes me appreciate my own internet connection here despite Germany is considered "quite slow"/backwards regarding general broadband availability - but well i had 6KB/s in 1995 , 16KB/s in 1996 , 100KB/s in 1999 and 200 KB/s in 2002 , 1 MB/s in 2004, 2,5 MB/s in 2006 and 6,5 MB/s in 2008 and nowadays i have 30MB/s so ya thinking about 20KB/s even though i really experienced it back in the days feels like a time travel ;) .
Good to hear that you got the university contacts though.
