Hi all

Interested to get your opinions on this. Which would you say is the best of the two? Annoyingly there are lots of Gog Dosbox titles that do not come with Mac installers and I'm not technically minded enough to be able to work out how to set them up manually! Is there an easy way to do this and would you opt for DosBox or Boxer on a mac?

Thanks in advance

I always use Boxer, it works fantastic and I've never had any problems with it. I think it's got better functionality than DosBox too.

The very idea of using WINE to run DosBox to play a DOS game simply gives me the shudders. However, it's not exactly easy to use Boxer when GOG only has the windows/dosbox version. Here is what you need to do:

1) Download the windows dosbox game from GOG.
2) Install the game in WINE. **If you don't know how to do this, I can give you a quick tutorial on it too. Let me know**
3) Navigate into the WINE-wrapped game app (using right-click and selecting "show package contents") until you get the the folder which contains the actual game. Drag the game folder into Boxer.
4) Done.

I haven't tried Boxer (as me have no Mac OS capable to run it) but DosBox isn't that bad for playing games.

GOG doesn't have Linux/MAC OS installers for their DosBox games due to "technicalities" whatever that is :P I found it's sometimes faster to download the pirate copy of an "abandonware" site than jumping thru all the hoops to get the game out of the windows installer, unfortunate side effect using GOG's DRM :P
Boxer all the way. For playing games on a Mac I use a combo of Boxer, Wine, CrossOver, and PlayonMac. Boxer if it's a true oldie, Wine for almost everything else, CrossOver on the occasions when I absolutely cannot get the Wine settings to play nice, and PlayonMac as an absolute last resort to getting something to run. Boxer and Wine cover 90% of my game needs. CrossOver is about 8%, and PlayonMac comes in at a grand 2%.

Boxer uses DOSBox, and Boxer is simpler to use.

There is no difference for the game, the game will not care. It's just a question of what you want, really.
I prefer Boxer myself, because it's more convenient and easier to organize everything.

There is no practical reason to run DOSBox by itself, apps like Boxer for the Mac and LaunchBox for Windows are great apps that use DOSBox and offer a better UI and experience.

Thanks for your responses guys, I'll follow your advice and go with Boxer! Hopefully I'll have Gabriel Knight up and running in no time :O
