ZFR: That's a good point. This actually could be a problem for me sometimes in some such levels. The level might be now impossible to beat without you knowing it, because you made a mistake at the start.
One Starcraft/Brood War special mission was specifically bad, as it had both a timer and set number of units. You couldn't really tell at any point whether you had enough time and/or units to reach the end in time, as you didn't know beforehand what kind of obstacles there'd be.
I actually like them a lot. The Men of War series has no bases and you mostly have to deal with the few resources you have, with very rare reinforcement options usually tied to side objectives.
World in Conflict is also great and without bases.

WoC usually has "a base" in reinforcement locations.
Not a fan of bases in strategy games. They can result in a stalemate with both sides pumping out units nonstop. I prefer a game where the resources are limited, turtling doesn't work and you have to be active and mobile. That said, I hate RTS in general so I'm mainly referring to TBS.

I'm totally the opposite BUT I like to help people, so if you want a RTS that is great for people who aren't fond of base building, try World in Conflict.

Not my cup of tea because, like I said, I like bases, but you might dig it.

Things you mentioned are very rare in RTS. Competitive RTS games are all about limited resources and constant movement across the map. Cossacks are one of the few "turtling" RTS games I know.

Yeah, but those are games that have no bases by design.

I love those kind of strategies too, but I was more interested about opinions on single baseless levels in games that are normally base-based (hehe).

I'm surprised and saddened that nobody has mentioned Zero Wing yet. :\

That joke is a distant cough at best, since Zero Wing is a space shooter.
